Hello,
My best friend's birthday is coming up in December and I want to purchase a present for her that I know will make her happy. We've been the best of friends for the past 30 years. She is very much into Chinese and a collector, while I do not know anything about it. It's been a month since I've been trying to buy her a present but I don't want to get her a modern replica. I almost got scammed trying. I want something real that will impress her
and make her happy. If anybody can help me, I would really appreciate it. I am going to post some pictures here and please tell me which ones are fake and which ones are the real deal and I can purchase. I thank you from the bottom of my heart and wish everyone Happy Holidays!
Kind regards,
Sylvia
Hi Sylvia,
That's very thoughtful of you. Your friend is very lucky!
I don't think any of these items are authentic. Be VERY careful with pieces marked with an imperial reign; they are usually anachronistic at best.
Instead, look at the selections this site offers in their weekly newsletters; that way you'll know you're getting something authentic.
Good luck!
Regards,
Steve
Unfortunately none of these look authentic. Real old pieces like these go into tens of thousands of $, is that what you want to spend? My suggestion are blue and white Kangxi plates. They look charming and you can find authentic pieces everywhere. Or Qianlong export porcelain. The Bidamount pages as Steve suggested are also a good idea and helpful for a beginner. Never buy directly from China.
Birgit
Thank you all for the answers! I wouldn't spend more than $2000 for this present but I understand that I can't get her anything really valuable for that price. I am going to take Shinigami's advice and go for Kangxi or Qianlong export. Maybe she will be happy if not impressed.
I wish you all Happy Holidays!
For $2000 you can get quite impressive Kangxi or Qianlong export pieces. For example here:

I have tried to come up with some ideas for a US buyer. This auction catalogue is coming up soon (preview only for now), the auction ends on the 12th of December. It would still be worth getting a 2nd opinion if you decide upon something because reproductions are everywhere (though the provenance seems like it is likely bulletproof for this sale). https://www.bonhams.com/auction/30753/chinese-decorative-works-of-art-from-the-alan-and-simone-hartman-collection/
A lot to consider

Chamberlain Antiques seems to have some ok jades up (would want 2nd opinion to be sure on one) https://www.ebay.com/str/chamberlainantiques
If the person is partial to Japanese antiques there may be a good opportunity to get something of good quality for a reasonable price.
@elm Chamberlain is an honest dealer. I don't know anything about jades, though.
Yes I find him to be one of the better dealers on eBay. I am not great on jades either so would not want to 100 percent endorse all of the jades he is selling, though I seem to remember Peter mentioning in a recent video that Chamberlain came into some good jades that he will be periodically auctioning off (I presume these are potentially from the same source).
@eamonng I have a few things that might be of interest. Feel free to shoot me an email if you want: [email protected]. John
@shinigami Thank you so much! Those are beautiful. I am going to take a look right now.
You all are wonderful people! I have so many choices now without being afraid that I am going to get scammed. In the meantime, I learned a little and now seeing all these beauties, I understand why my friend loves them so much.
I wish you all the best and Happy Holidays!
Just a further point on Chamberlain for an example(as I do not want to endorse everything being sold 100 percent), he has described this jar as likely early 20thc which is a fair description. I personally would not rule out the possibility of being later, which he does not either by leaving the attribution relatively open ended. Item number: 156494451097 . I have no issue with his description to be clear.
@eamonng If the item appeals to you, then chances are it will appeal to your friend. Don't forget lovely more modern pieces, Japan has a category of National Living Treasure (if she does not care for antiques and many people are superstitious in regard to them). I am reminded of a formerly active member who gave the handle of National Living Embarrassment, I hope well and prospering. 😃 Sharon
