I have a pair of plates which i recently purchased which i am trying to properly identify. I wanted to call them famille verte, but there is also rose and jaune/yellow - all of which confuse me in terms of designation. Also, does the aubergine chain inside and encircling the yellow have a name?
I tried to consult my What Would Peter Do (WWPD) bracelet, this time focusing on coloring. The leaves and flower petals have gradation which is a signal to higher quality - it is not ham-fisted color. The branch on the tree is weak and a detraction but it has reasonably enameled berries. the painting is very carefully done throughout.
Turning to the foot, i see mostly white with a bit of black kiln grit - otherwise the paste looks quite clean.
I could not identify the mark.
I would appreciate any answers to the foregoing, including an estimate of age - i have no expectations of great age - it could have been made last month and for the money wouldn't faze me in the least.
My guess is later 20th c. Probably not much other than decorative value, but let's see if others agree.
Actually, I agree. The one thing i forgot to consider was the glaze - it is thin to almost absent in places. Thank you for the help.
Hi Tony, you have already done a lot of work to determine the age. In my opinion there are only two points to consider when you find something you can't immediately identify:
1. Is it printed or has printed parts? Then skip it.
2. If hand painted: is the quality high, medium or low? High quality can always be accepted, even on modern pieces.
On your plate the central pattern seems to have printed outlines that have been filled rather sloppiliy with color. The harsh gradation of color in the petals is also a sign of a more recent production. The border is printed as you can see at one o'clock where the ruyi pattern overlaps. Overall quality is not high, so just decorative value as John already said.

I appreciate your comments but i disagree on a couple of points. I never had expectations that this plate was old or valuable. My main interest was properly identifying its decorative style. Perhaps the best which can be said about it is that it is polychrome.
The main point of disagreement is concerning the use of printing which typically would be a transfer technique. In this case, I see none of that. I examined with a loupe the section to which you referred at 1 o'clock, and can confidently state that it is enamel, and in this case outlining which went astray as did the synchronizing of the ruyi. I have the unfair advantage of having the plate at hand.
So yes, we can grade its quality. In the large scheme of things it is not bad. I admit that the composition is on the garish side, but I see that all across time and is often a trait of Chinese palette preferences especially in modern times. The painting over all is rather controlled and neat with definite slips, something which i see on the old pieces as well.
The gradation on the flower petals is clumsy, but I see none at all on the pieces i commonly encounter - i don't shop high end locales - i am a cheap date - like the branches on the plate - little effort was put into that.
I actually date it to c. 1990/2000 time period but would be gratified with c. 1980.
Over all i give it a C+ or a 6/10. please understand that i am not comparing it to imperial wares or those produced under other aristocratic patronage.
i have no monetary attachment to this plate and only very limited emotional attachment. anyone is free to opine on it - i welcome the critiques.
Hi Tony,
here are two examples of what I would call good painting quality. They are no expensive or even imperial items, just two modest priced Chinese export items.
Guangxu plate €50
Fitzhugh platter €30

yes, the plate on the left is especially nicely done - the colors are mellow and harmonious and the price actually is a bargain assuming that it is 9-10". i certainly like both, but the left is more interesting to me.
