I had a rare opportunity to be involved in an auction to liquidate a museum here in Colorado the major auction houses were given first dibs everything in the auction I was in was what they didn’t want. This very large box was in the auction I have never seen a box like this it is wrapped in skin of some type the top is very dirty but after a test clean I can’t take the chance of damage to the paint. The bronze hardware was once gilded it could be early brass also. I’m looking for help on dating the birds look Ming to Kangxi style. I can’t find anything online. Thanks for any help.
Does it have a distinct, pleasant aroma inside? If so it is a camphor chest. They used them to store silks from what I have read. My guess is that it would be 19th to 20th C. At least that seems to be when most of them are dated to that I have noticed. But yours has more imagery than many I've seen, so it does seem potentially unusual. Also the size seems a bit different. Who knows, maybe you're right and it is older. But the beautiful condition makes me think it could not have held up that well if it was that old given what it is made of. Might be one to have Peter to look at. John

I am pretty sure it is a pigskin chest (look for pores dotting the skin), A friend of mine has a similarly decorated one form the late 19th century, the hardware is/was gilded. Not really sure for how long they made these, but yours is in incredible condition, and very pretty.

Thanks guys all I know is it was acquired in 1880 by the Museums founder so I know at least that date. I agree it has a 19th century feel to it. We have to keep in mind that everything in the museum sat for at least 140 years most in storage.
@jbeer2121 you are spot on about this box being pig skin.
@julia the auctioneer just described everything as antique Chinese or antique Japanese it was not very organized they figured that the majors took the good stuff and have thousands of pieces to get rid of. But everything I bought was cheap.
@lotusblack if the smell is sweet and fragrant, then it is most likely lined with camphor. The smell would be strongest just after you open it and if in that moment you stick your head down inside and take a big whiff it will be quite strong if it's camphor.
