I recently became interested in miniatures. Mainly because they don’t take up much space. These are the first miniatures I’ve come across with rings on the bottom. The paste is very white. Any thoughts?
more and better pictures please
tam
I took more pics. These were the best ones. The blue is somewhat softened by the overglaze.
Are they heavy for their size , or light ? if they feel heavy , then that would be a good sign , I think , if they are light , and possibly made in a mould , then they could be fairly recent.
The photos don't really allow for a definite opinion, but it's possible they are from the C18th - the decoration is quite nice . But I can't see any age related wear. Also the shape seems more like a modern copy .
tam
I kind of want to say they’re heavy. One weighs 24 grams and 56 x 33mm; the other weighs 26 grams, 57 x 33mm. Proportionally very close.
The foot in both have a nice bevel
Could they be Japanese? Although, usually, there is only one blue circle on the base, but it is positioned right up to the foot rim.
It is really hard to tell from the photos, but I think they might be fairly modern.
Julia
Here is a miniature vase , being sold for a very high price by jdmasturrock on ebay - for reference . It is 8.5 cm tall , and 105g.
Not that that decides anything , just for comparison. The cobalt blue is different from your two vases. Maybe your are Japanese , as Julia says.
tam
The thing that intrigues me is how well the foot is trimmed and beveled. The Japan miniatures I’ve handled have a rounded or uneven feet.
They could well be Chinese. The only Japanese miniatures I have had have all been Satsuma or cloisonné so they don't offer a good comparison. The foot reminds me of a larger pot / jar I have. I will try to take a photo before I go to work. I assumed that was Japanese because of a mark underneath.
Julia
Thanks Julia. I honestly cannot be sure if it is one or two circles on the base. Just too obscured by the overglaze . I still am very impressed by how well the foot is trimmed on these little guys. Looking forward to your pics
Still working on these little mysteries. Gotheborg mentions this stepped or undercut foot shows up in the Kangxi period and again later during the Kangxi revival of the Guangxu period. The apparent reason being to fit the foot snuggly into a wooden pedestal. That makes sense being so small they’d need pedestals. With that said, could this likely be a Guangxu pair? I have a preconceived notion that Kangxi cobalt blue pigment would be deeper blue. Input very much appreciated. Regards, Terry
Hi,
I did take some photos but they were so blurry I didn't bother posting them. I see in your recent pictures what you mean about the way the foot has been cut, mine isn't like that.
I still think these may be modern and possibly Japanese. Hope you get some more informed assistance than mine!
Julia
Isn’t the acanthus leaves top band a Chinese thing?
Chinese designs were widely copied but as I said, I really don't know. They do make the vase look Chinese but equally, the wispy grassy bits remind me of Seto.
Either way, I think these are relatively modern. I am really sorry I can't be more helpful.
Julia
