Hi folks,
I hope that someone might be able to help me with a large Satsuma vase. Its approximately 36"h x 24"w & d. This was something that my father had since the late '70/80s and am trying to identify the maker or writing on the bottom. If you have an idea of value, that would be an added bonus. This is not something that I am selling but will be giving it as a gift.

It’s just my opinion but I believe this vase was for the court. The crest on the front leads me to think this.
It is a very fine gift. It may be worth getting an expert evaluation? You could send photos to a relevant specialist at one of the auction houses. Put 36 inch Satsuma jar in the subject, I am sure it will grab their attention quite fast.
Or, I think the satsuma-database.nl site offer their opinion for a small fee.
I think you need to know if it does have a high value because whoever you are giving it to will need to insure it.

Thank you to all for the help that you have given, it puts me on a path to getting more information about it. I'll let you all know what comes of deeper looking into the piece. I gave it to her this weekend and she was floored by it. She has been a friend for many years and turned 75, she is like a second mother to me.
It was worth it to see that shocked smile on her face.
Just wanted to give all of you that helped out what Peter had to say about the piece.
He said that it is not an imperial piece but was unusually big and a complicated construct. He dated it from 1875 to 1880, but could not identify the maker's mark. On a side note, I had a friend's mother who is from Japan look at the characters, and she said that it could be Sho-Satsumayaki or Sei-Satsumayaki, the 1st character could be read 2 different ways. She does not know anything about antiques.
The price at auction would bring between 3-4k or as high as 6k if it were in an auction with good lots of satsuma. In a high retail shop, NY or simial would have a retail value of 10-15k
