Could someone let me know if they can read this signature and translate it for me?  Sorry for the small photo....someone is selling a screen with birds rendered in the literati style....I like it, but it's not a low enough price for me to just buy it, and research later.

Thanks!

I can translate the name to Chinese for you “Written by Zhi Ying” but can’t into Japanese. Would be interested to see the entire screen and a rough price to provide an opinion.

@greeno107

Very nice quality byobu from late Meiji to Taisho eras 1890-1930. How does seller describe this? Remember if you purchase for display it will take a large room to properly display. I personally prefer landscapes and probably would wait for a nice landscape at that price point rather than birds. I think you should be looking at $2000 for a nice one as I’ve seen these at that price point.

@gfhandel I tend to keep it under $1000 for this type of screen unless it is absolutely stunning to look at.  Agreed... gonna pass on this one.  Working on another buy already.

@gfhandel  What you think of this one?  I LOVE IT!  Any idea of the artist?  Never seen one like this...might have to go all the way on getting this piece!

@greeno107

I mean I may have had a few Manhattan's, and feeling extra cozy tonight, but that is the perfect screen, makes me feel right at home.   Really tugs at my heart missing my pup...

It's a very nice screen. Very subjective to one's taste.

Personally not to my liking. Looks to be circa 1930's. Hope @gfhandel or others can decipher the marks.

Just my opinion. I like the more traditional styling.

@jbeer2121  I get what you're saying...

Yes, the scene is two dogs lying on the floor, but the raised head of the one dog, perhaps awoken from its master arriving home after a long day of work, or perhaps startled by the sounds of pending danger approaching their master's home at night....

There is a mystery to be solved in the expression of the alert dog's face.

@imperialfinegems  I'm hoping you're thoughts are those of my competitors on this one.  I have a real fondness of Taisho period art that focuses on the new movement of expressionism (such as Shin Hanga), but judging by the 50 watchers on this screen....I'm in for a fight.

The signature is Tetsuzan (Iron mountain).  Sorry, that's all I can tell you, but I agree that it's a beautiful screen.

@jjytlee Thank you!  Google search comes up with Mori Tetsuzan, but that would place the screen at the first half of the 19th c.  It could be, but I'm a little surprised.

@greeno107 Mori Tetsuzan’s is a different « tetsu ».  I did find a Yano Tetsuzan online that is the right tetsu, but none of the signatures I saw was written in the same style as on your screen. You probably noticed that Tetsuzan is a popular name among martial artists and military men.

@greeno107

Has a western feeling and if you like it hope you can get it. I think it is in the Shin Hanga school post 1920. I wouldn’t be bidding as I am a cat person so one less competitor for you 😀

@jjytlee Thanks for finding the right artist. Makes sense... Naga artist, but sadly not well represented at auction.

I've already been outbid....$2000 with premium....someone loves it more than me. 😪
