I recently purchased this on Ebay. I was wondering if it could possibly date to the Republic period. Thanks for any help.
It is just marked China and not Made in China, so it is before 1921, could be late Qing or Republic. It is very pretty. Sharon
Thanks. I liked it mostly because of the shading on the pomegranate. Silly reason for a purchase but what the hay.
Hi Paula G,
Sharon is correct technically.
However it's not set in stone. As these were often carried right through to the later part of the 20th century.
Unfortunately I don't think your item is from the Republic period. I think it is later.
Mark
Thanks. How much later do you believe it dates from? I know marks are not set in stone but I was thinking it might be pre WWII, sometime in the 1930's.
Hi Paula,
It's difficult to determine exactly. I did try and find a similar example of the mark without success. If you could find a similar mark then that would narrow down the possibilities of when it was made.
My inkling is perhaps 50's/60's. The overall design is unusual and static.
Perhaps if Birgit logs in. She may have a thought or two.
Mark
It’s difficult to tell without handling it. I think it’s from the first half of the 20th century The gold looks old as do some flaws on the body and the hand painted outlines. The guy with the green brush did a sloppy job but the rest of the colors are nicely applied. Somehow it’s always the guy with the green brush who botches it, even on Daoguang Canton export plates. The green coloring was perhaps executed by an apprentice and they thought: no problem, the Westerners will buy it anyway. But I agree it’s a nice plate and far away from the partly printed atrocities of later years.

@lotusblack You are correct, in the USA McKinley Tariff Act 1891 required the country origin, 1914 change required the words Made in to be added to country of origin, the 1921 change required that the name of country be in the English language, Japan instead of Nippon. That does not mean that variations were not allowed into the country, as the exporter could just slap on a paper label meeting the USA requirements. Another thing to keep in mind is that when the Communists took control of China in 1949, trade with the USA was restricted, especially during the Korean War, the Viet Nam War and thereafter until Nixon's ping pong diplomacy. Barring the use of paper labels and providing it was not acquired overseas and brought back to the USA, it is likely to be from 1891-1914. Sharon
I have seen that mark on a lot of Chinese porcelain it is a late Qing mark but I have seen it on modern pieces also to give a older date. Canton pieces are being made today like this piece. But the quality is not the same or even close. This piece is not the modern Canton I have been seeing.
