I just picked up this awesome enamel vase. I think it’s Japanese? I was given some history, but I am not sure the seller was correct.
It is 7 inches tall, and 3.5 to 4 inches in diameter at the widest point. It is in excellent condition.
Any ideas? The fan designs are so cool and it has sparkle ground in the green fan, plus an aqua metallic inlay in another.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.
April
Your cloisonne vase appears to be Japanese judging by the enamels. I also think that it probably dates to the very late 19th century to early 20th century.
Out of interest what history are you referring to?
Mark
Well you were right on the mark there, Mark, as he did say that it pre-dated 1920. So that is probably correct however, this is not his specialty and he was selling it for a friend and he was firm on price which I thought was fair. I was more so wanting to know the artist or region or something more specific about the region it was from. I think the design is unusual and somewhat rare to see given the metallic use and the fine work.
I appreciate your insight, thank you.

Maybe I'm missing something but this seems to be a good commercial piece rather than a fine art piece, possibly made for the export market at the time of the art nouveau movement, or the rage for all things Japanese after the 1860s. Japan made some spectacular cloisonne , especially the wireless cloisonne with birds and lots of open space, by known artists or studios, but this type of vase , with fan shape enclosures and the black ground, is quite common , I believe.
tam
@tam18, could be Art Nouveau era, for sure, it’s blue ground though. Pics may be misleading. The waves were very similar to some I had seen on EBay attributed to Kumeno Teitaro, so I really thought it was something special.
April
The quality of enameling and workmanship is really fine IMO, and thenfan motif and design I have not found anywhere in my hours of scouring on the Internet, so I am truly stumped. If it is made for the export market, doesn’t it mean that it’s mass produced, so an internet search should bring some similar results? I have no idea.
April
Without a Mark by the artist it is very difficult to attribute said piece to a particular artist. Especially with Japanese cloisonne and bronzes.
The Meiji period (1868-1912) was literally the golden age of production. Not only cloisonne but also bronzes etc etc. There were literally thousands of artists many of them producing high-end works.
I did have a look at the one on eBay. Sadly that one also has no mark. The seller believes it to be by the artist etc. That one looks like similar to yours.
I did however find some works by Kumeno Teitaro (1865-1939) who apparently exhibited some of his works. So he was a known artist. Other than the one on eBay I found no other works that looked similar to yours.
There is a rather good reference book that may be able to help you etc.
"The art of Japanese cloisonne enamel 1600 to present date" by Fredric T Schneider.

Thanks Mark! I love reference books. I will check it out.

@Davinax18
There are also a number of his works/examples via the bonhams past sales search along with a few from christies. Once again nothing that resembles yours I am sorry to say.
A number of his works appear from my limited look to have a very distinct style and enamel glaze.
Mark
Hi,
That is quite an unusual vase. I like the prunus/hawthorn part, it is very prettily done. I know far less than the others and I was thinking it might be a bit more recent (1930s?), so it is good that I am learning here, too.
I can just about make out the little circles around the base so it must be Japanese. That is quite a Japanese blue too but I find the orange an unusual shade and are the leaves on the flower upside down?
May I ask, is there something on the base? I haven't come across one like that. Also, do you have a picture of the mouth/top, please? It won't necessarily make me tell you something so if you are busy, don't worry. I am just interested to see it and what colour it is inside etc.
Julia
Yes Julia, It is unsigned on the bottom, see above, and I will attach some pics of the top. No I wont, the file size is too big. It is green inside. Also, I have found a very similar unmarked bowl attributed to Kumeno Teitaro on Trocadero this morning, and by the similarity of design, I think I have my answer!
April
Interesting bowl being offered by Golden Age Antiques. Also very unusual. Apparently Kumeno Teitaro had a certain style with clouds and water impressions that appear on your vase.
According to Steve Sly from Steve Sly Japanese works of art (a prominent dealer in the UK who only deals with Japanese art as opposed to other dealers who deal generally in asian antiques etc) said of unsigned works by the masters of the Meiji period.
'.... It was not uncommon for retailers and commissioning agents to request unsigned works from prominent artists....'
Steve does have a superb example by the said master. Also attributed to and unsigned. Maybe you may wish to ask his opinion/other? Perhaps fellow members who appreciate Japanese art, if they have not already done so visit his site. He truly has some outstanding pieces on offer with some hefty asking prices in my opinion. But still well worth the visit in my opinion. His listing clearly show the superior quality being produced during the Meiji period etc.
steveslyjapaneseart.com
Of course he is only one of many dealers you could ask. I only mentioned him because a number of people I know really trust his opinion etc.
Mark
Thank You so much!
