Hello.
As you know The Fukagawa mark is very confusing, there are subtle variations in the Mt Fuji and the curve of the river under it, and some have signature and others just have Mt Fuji and river.
In this bowl we have a fish and it appears to been done using brown, and the seller has suggested the Bowl is early 20th century and it is very beautifully designed on the back.
What does this backmark tell us and has anyone got a guess or opinion please. Whenever i get something i just have to know if my hunch is right. P.s don't go peeking at it on google...I won it fair and square for £12.81p.
As an example of a more Modern Fukagawa Item ...With a very similar backmark.

What a nice piece for your collection , A steal for the price , I guess its all hand painted ?
I would only be guessing but mid 20th century comes to mind 1940?
Carl
P.S I am also guessing at Catawiki was the scene of the crime , they always use the same backdrop , it must be built in to the listings
Hi SD,
Great looking bowl and fantastic price!
IMO this Fukagawa mark is not early 20th century but probably post 1960. If there was evidence of a blue orchid then perhaps earlier.
The mark on your bowl is primarily the same used today give or take.
A lot of similar items to yours are often described as antique by sellers at auction and ebay when in fact they are modern.

I think i found my Bowl 🙂
Year: Meiji (Meiji)-Taisho (taisyo) period
Model number: None Picture
number: None
Height: 31 cm Maximum diameter: 23 cm Diameter: 12 cm Elevation : 15 cm
Picture teacher: Fukagawa
magnetism Fukagawa mvases for which it is good is.
The eyebrows are beautifully painted in black and white using black (including tea).
Makoto is also depicted in the Royal Copenhagen vase.
Perhaps, the real pattern or fish pattern of Copenhagen is thought to be the influence of Hiroshige.
In addition,
it is probable that the true authenticity of this Fukagawa Semense was produced under the influence of Royal Copenhagen .

It is possible a copy of the work of Fukagawa Tadaharu design. I find it fascinating how Noritake and Fukagawa have such a close history using the same artists and geographical region. They are both styles that when i first began that I just happened upon and chose out of hundreds of and hundreds of styles, I went with Noritake and Fukagawa, not even knowing what Fukagawa was and no idea of the relationship.

L0l No, It was Ebay, and from Baby Dragon. Catawiki is too expensive for postage, i got this with free post from Baby Dragon. So it really was a steal.
Early Fukagawa/koransha circa 1880+ are delightful hand painted objects. The Koransha meaning "the company of the scented orchid"
Superb skill by artists including Kinsaku Ide & Tosui Ninomiya both exhibited in Paris 1900.

Yes, and i am lucky to have one or two of these which i think you have seen one of, they are so beautiful, and i always thought they were simply Japanese Imari but indeed they were Koransha. Before I learned that it was a Koransha after Carl posted his Fukagawa it all made sense then that it was so hard to find more of them. I used to search for the design and found similar designs, 1950's designs and well so many versions but never the same quality. So now i know 🙂 what to look for.
I have a feeling that the Bowl i posted above that i got from Ebay might possibly be one of those that arrive in the wooden box, but I have found that the pattern is mentioned on a blog as Fukagawa Seika Peony small bird figure. However I am also quite optimistic it is from 1920's.
Excellent buy! Is this fish underglaze? If so than it would be very similar in style to the Fukagawa snuff bottle i have with similar mark, I thought it was early 20C as well.

I have to wait and see Spartakos, it has not arrived yet, but will study it carefully. That is a lovely snuff bottle. I posted some links and i think have another link that might be useful for the backmarks.
I take it your snuff bottle has the Carp fish in underglaze.

Thank you Stuart.
I am puzzled and delighted at the same time. I have some serious research to do before I can determine it's age.
It is underglaze indeed. And I saw an almost identical one sold by some auction house dated as Meiji. But from what i know this mark is considered post 50s. I hope you shed some light on it.

There are many variations of the signature so I would not base it on that alone. However I am going to try pin it down a little better.
