Hello all,
I am taking on a research project as part of my duties as a new docent for the Bayou Bend Collection of American Decorative Arts. The objects of my research are a Chinese Export Garniture set in the museum collection. All that is listed in the object file is that it is Chinese Export, c. 1790-1805, hard paste porcelain, and purchased from David Stockwell in 1969. There is no mention of any marks on the bases.
I have started looking for similar items with this cartouche type decoration and central medallion probably based on a European landscape print. No luck in ‘Treasures of Chinese Export Ceramics from the Peabody Essex Museum” . I did find a saucer that has an oval central medallion of Mount Vernon based on a known print by Samual Seymour in 1804. The border design on this saucer is much more elaborate and incorporates diaper, scale, and trellis design with butterflies. The saucer was pictured in “China for the West” by Howard & Ayers.
My hope is those of you in the forum with an interest in theses export wares can point me towards other useful reference works or experts in the field that might be helpful. Better yet, if anyone has come across something with a similar design in another museum or collection that would be most helpful.
You may wish to consult The China Trade by Carl Crossman, 1972 - not because it may help you directly, but because a bibliography or source reference may help. The book is quite good, but it does not cover porcelain.
Hi Bill,
I've checked most of my books today, but I was not able to find any identical to this set. This is the first time I've seen this scene, and that border with the bats. It's a very interesting set! There are many that have a central cartouche with a sepia scene seemingly after a European engraving, however, but none with this exact layout or scene from what I was able to find. Here are a few I was able to find in my books that are distantly similar:
Polly might be able to help you with this set! I have two other research projects going on where I'm trying to identify the source print/engraving. This one looks like it has the same keywords, so I'll keep yours in mind as I search through.
As for examples of different European landscape scenes in a central cartouche, here are a few:

Bats! I didn’t see that until you pointed them out. The curator work sheet in the object file mis-identified them as “large swags” and “scrolled floral border”. I checked the photos again expecting to find five bats representing the five great blessings, but to my surprise there are only four bats in each main cartouche. Each bat seems to be flying among a simplified form of clouds that possibly might represent a wish for one’s happiness to be as high as the heavens. There is added symbolism with the spoken word for bat (fu) which is the same pronunciation for good luck. Also, the bats look to be drawn with red pigment which is also a lucky color. It is fascinating that the American owners most likely never realized that there were bats on their expensive Garniture set since Western bat symbolism is totally opposite of Chinese symbolism.
@william I had never heard of the five great blessings before, so thank you for mentioning that. I looked it up quickly and this was the first thing I came across: Chinese culture: five blessings, also known as the "Five Happiness" or "Five Good Fortunes", which refer to longevity, wealth, health and composure, love of virtue, and the desire to die a natural death in old age (or timely death).
So I went back and looked at my lacquer painted wedding chest I recently acquired and saw there are five bats on that one, which I had thought looked less symmetrical than four would have looked, but now I have a better understanding of why. Thanks!

The art of calligraphy - and for the ancient Chinese it certainly was an art - aimed to demonstrate superior control and skill using brush and ink. Calligraphy established itself as one of the major Chinese art forms during the Han dynasty (206 BCE - 220 CE), and for two millennia after, all educated men were expected to be proficient at it.
