Hi everyone-- I am on a garden seat craze and I came across these and love them! Are they right for 19th century? My first though was yes, but always love to poll the group!
Hi Dragonfly,
the colorful garden seat is probably early 20th century, before the 1920s, nicely done. The green and blue pair could be printed, I‘m not sure. You can compare the blue pattern on both to see if they are identical. Two items in perfect condition are seldom old, usually one would be damaged. (It’s a bit off topic, but if a seller has only pairs of things, as you sometimes see on Ebay, you can be sure they’re fakes.)
Birgit
I would agree with Birgit on the first one. Similarly the second lot is a bit of an enigma. I had a look at the photos under magnification and couldn’t see any obvious signs of having been printed but there is something unusual in the style. Maybe they’re fine for late 19th century but that there are elements that are a bit stiff? Not quite as loose? Maybe it’s just the contrast of the naturalistic, almost nostalgic style of the side panels compared to the boldness of the bats?
The pair look to be in good condition. As Birgit says, this might also give one pause? I think I saw these on Ebay bout a week ago. They were being sold as 19th century by Joanie’s House of Treasures? I’m not sure if Joanie has been mentioned on the forum in the past?
Not much help I’m afraid! But very interesting items.
Nic
I like the famille rose set, they also look like they have some legitimate wear to the seats. I would be bold and say that they could also be late 19th century or early 20th century (as Birgit already suggested). The other pair, I don't know. I would probably ask for more detailed pictures of the decoration on the panels, as well as the bats, just to make sure there was nothing fishy going on with the decoration. One thing that I do note is that the top decoration does not fit well with the geometry of the piece, only 5 bats when there are 6 sides? Might not be anything, but if I was decorating the piece, 6 bats would work better with the geometry of the top (maybe that's just latent OCD surfacing on my part 😛 )

I had the same reservations on the celadon, though this seller has some wonderful things (it seems Nic also spotted them!) so was hoping for the best.
I don't often buy on ebay, so was trying to poke around a little!
I also saw those on ebay (the celadon ones) and thought of you and the previous pair that I thought were a strange shape. I also had reservations about these ones because I felt there was something unharmonious about them.
I like the famille rose, though.
The seller Joanie has been talked about here before , please use the search button to read a bit about them before you consider buying from them.
Birgit
They went so high! I was surprised!
