Had some real fun today. Found a whole box full of late 19th century(I think), mostly Japanese porcelain. Or possibly all Japanese. Purchased 40 items...mostly very small tea cups, but a few big nice bowls and some other odds and ends. Here are four I could use some help with. Four pics of each. All sort of self-explanatory I guess...except for the third item. The octagonal bowl with birds. There is a repair in the middle...with lighter coloring. And the funny thing is, it looks like the pattern of little circles was redrawn on top of the repair! Has any seen this before? I thought it was pretty funny. I suppose it could have been done by the original artist, I don’t know. But even then, I find it kind of funny. The repair is visible on the inside and on the base, with the lighter color. And besides that, the bowl itself is a mystery to me. I have been unable to find a similar pattern. Thanks for any help. ? Todd

Hi Todd,
I like the bird bowl, it's highly original, haven't seen the pattern before. What a pity it was damaged and restored rather badly. The lidded box is transfer printed and might be from England or from Japan, maybe someone knows.

Hi Todd,
The sauce boat like item is an old Japanese copy of Wanli famille verte. How old ? No idea.
The bowl with blue birds/cranes is a Japanese copy of Jiajing white and blue, nice one.

Hi
the second one, the covered tea or soup bowl looks to early to mid C20th Japanese
the fourth one I agree is typical English transfer ware , and quite old , possibly mid to late C19th. It's small and could be a conserve/jam/preserve dish for the breakfast table.

Thanks Xin, Shin and Tam,
Lots of good information. Always appreciated.

....And two bowls that were in the same box....just piled in the box, like everything else....like garbage, no protection from damage. To me they are very nice, I don’t get it. ?
And I don’t usually mention what I payed...because it can be bad form...buy in this case I will mention that I payed the equivalent of $27 usd for the 40 items combined. Seems absurd. I was pretty happy.

That was a good price. I agree the transfer printed lidded dish is reminiscent of English wares but the base and porcelain look Japanese to me.
The last two items are quite nice, especially the deeper bowl.
Julia
Hi Julia ?
Thanks so much. I think I like that bowl the best also. The other one is pretty, with the additional green color, but the drawing is more common. Any comment on the repaired bowl? Weird right? I guess it is a poorly done repair as Shin says. But at least they thought the bowl was worth saving, going through all that trouble, so there is that.
Best, Todd

Hi Todd,
I think the repaired bowl is also Japanese - is it meant to depict birds feeding on seeds from grass heads? It may have been repaired because it had emotional value to the owner. Maybe their child gave it to them. That would explain a poor repair - if the item itself had intrinsic value it may have had a better repair, if the owner could afford it, of course.
Or maybe it was cheaper to have a rough repair than replace it? Always interesting to think why people repair things, that is why I quite like damaged items, I like to think about what went on during its earlier lifetime: how did it break, why was it mended etc.
Have a nice day,
Julia
Hi Julia,
A good analysis as always. You know, your second paragraph reminded me of dialogue in a scene from Sideways, the movie. When Virginia Madsen is talking about wines, and why she likes them. ?

Hi Todd,
I've not seen that. I shall have to look it up. ?
Best wishes,
Julia
Julia,
Such a great movie. Paul Giamatti at his best. I think it won the best screenplay oscar.

Probably best to post one at a time... I have a hard time going back and forth to see which items being talked about...
