Hi All,
Here is another piece that I am not sure about. It is a large blue and white plate (11") with a flower pattern. The decoration is hand-applied and is a slightly greyish blue, and the glaze is a pale bluish white, with the bottom, inside the foot rim, being slightly paler. There is a coffee-colored dressing on the rim.
The foot rim is V-shaped, and almost, but not quite, overhanging on the inside. Two blue circles in the center of the bottom, and no kiln stilt marks and no kiln grit. Where there is a small chip, the porcelain is very white and very glassy.
To me, the bottom, the greyish-blue decoration, and the bluish glaze looks good for maybe first half of the 19th century? But the very white porcelain and the lack of kiln grit suggests maybe earlier (or, maybe modern?)? It has the two circles, and I did find a supposed Kangxi plate with a relatively similar design, in a similar greyish-blue decoration and bluish glaze. Here is the link:
Antique porcelain Kangxi plate of 23 cm - China - ca. 1710 - Catawiki
But the plate didn't go for much, so maybe it is a fake. Is this plate Kangxi? Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Charles
Irritatingly, I just, wrote a reply and as I posted it, I got logged out with an error message.
Basically, I think it is Kangxi. I posted a plate a few years ago, with a grayish tone that I thought was Kangxi, but wasn't certain because of that. Peter explained there were 3 types of blue used then and mine was the lowest quality one.
I can't be 100% sure yours is as I can't remember if mine has the bluish glaze. I think it has, I can look later. I have checked online just now and have also seen some kangxi plates described as having a slightly blue tinge. Qianlong plates may be seen more often with the bluish tinge, I have several, but they don't have blue circles and your pattern seems more Kangxi in style.
So those are the reasons that I am pretty certain it is Kangxi, but let's see what others think. I shall copy before I post this time. Apologies if I sound rushed, my dog is telling me it is time for our walk! 😊
I agree with Julia. Looks Kangxi not 19th century the leafs are painted stiff in the 19th century. Good find
Yes, I too think it's Kangxi. Very nice plate. Sometimes Kangxi can be bought for astonishingly little money, probably it's out of fashion at the moment with people all crazy for Republic and even later, but they have never achieved such a beautiful blue as in Kangxi.
Birgit
@shinigami Birgit I totally agree with the Republic porcelain trending do you know what is promoting this? I’ve seen republic pieces fetching big dollars right now.
Brian I think it’s just fashion coming and going. A few years ago everyone wanted Tang horses. It’s a good time now to buy Kangxi and Qianlong, though I wouldn’t bet on a spectacular rise of the prices.
Birgit
Thanks, All! My first Kangxi piece!
I am feeling a lot better about the money I spent on my trip. Unfortunately, the phoenix pattern bowl and this plate were the two pieces I had the most confidence in. The rest may make you laugh!
