An antiques dealer sold me a jar offered as decorative which had some characteristics reminiscent of ones peter associated with older pieces in one or two of his tutorials.
1. the underside has a slightly oxidized ring which he related to older pieces
2. the foot is a bit crudely cut but i have forgotten what that characteristic reveals - i think that it might have been on older pieces.
3. the porcelain is buff and clean, though kiln grit is evident on the foot rim. again i have forgotten its significance - probably newer.
4. the glaze stops crisply at the base - a property i recall peter associating with older pieces
5. the enamels are translucent, moderate, and harmonious, a trait which might indicate any time period, but often associated with high periods of chinese porcelains. The yellow is very mellow, there are alternating shades of green on the leaves, vines, and melons. the orange is not that harsh obnoxious shade seen so often on modern pieces.
6. the painting is controlled, precise, and orderly, an observation of dubious value, but which could conspire with others to suggest an older period.
7. the design is balanced, coherent, and pleasant, a subjective evaluation, but also one associated with high points in chinese porcelain production
there is a faint mark on the underside, and inside the lid which i believe was to match the bottom with the lid.
Any opinions welcome regarding age, quality, style, etc. The assumption is that it is decorative, but is that correct?
Yes, imo this would be a newer decorative piece. Just keep looking at authentic examples as much as possible and you will begin to see the differences very clearly.
Looks like a nice piece to me. I would get a second opinion. It does have some age and is nicely painted.
I agree with John, this is a modern piece. It has some decorative value in the right setting, but if you are looking for older pieces, you can always check here before buying. I hope you didn't spend too much on it.
