I won this recently (picking it up Monday), but I can't find any reference to the shape in a vase or brush washer, but I had to buy it.. Very unusual? does anyone know what it is? It's quite small at less than 14cm tall.
It's definitely a small vase.
It's Qianlong marked 1725-96
But I believe it's a 20th Century example.

Is it a four seasons vase? It seems nicely painted until you get to the top. Why is the blue decoration around the mouth so worn? Are we supposed to think there was a lid?
However, if there was, then the mouth would likely have been cut down and polished as the shape looks very unusual for a lidded jar as it is, but if that is correct, then there would be no wear around the mouth.
I think this is later 20th c.
@julia thanks that's what I thought, as the shape literally doesn't exist anywhere I've looked.. there might have been a mouth that's been cut off and polished then repainted in gold as you say.. looks like it could have been a meiping vase possibly? Or a you say a jar, but the way the shape is inverted from the foot isn't a jar shape I know of.. I was hoping it might be Republic from the way the landscape s are painted, which look very typical of Republic landscapes to me .. also the fine work (small scale) doesn't look like a modern style to my eye, the choice of red ground, the loose style, the hybrid cover of colour / mishmash of famille rose and landscape,and enamels look to fit Republic to me.
Yes I think it's later 20th century too and one of many new forms that kerp appearing. But nicely done.

This has not been cut down nor is it Republic period I have seen a few of these coming out of China at the container store same shape and style.
I wasn't suggesting it had actually been cut down, just that maybe we are meant to think that and that there could be a missing lid. Those are pretend signs of age or use.
For me, the messy blue does not make sense and any explanation of this jar, has to address that. I found another on which the blue around the top border is complete. Could that part be printed?

@julia Hi Julia, I picked this up today and strangely or perhaps not? It seems to have some Cí Kè engraved parts (that you suggested for the brush washer post), (specifically the top section that is regrading) you can see from where the paint has flaked that below is engraved with tge same pattern as far as I can tell... What does this mean ? I looked at the link you sent on Cí Kè but all the examples.seem to be black amd white..
I am really sorry but I don't know what Cí Kè is. The link I posted here is in all in colour. Are you able to photograph what you mean?

Oh I see. Thanks. If you can see vague outlines of the pattern even where it looks like it has worn away, that would seem to imply printed outlines which were later coloured in to give a hand-painted appearance.
