I grabbed this on a whim then realized after the fact of what it actually was.
Is this piece early republic period? It's missing the lid but the artwork/coloring is really nice still. It's heavy suggesting its later but not sure if it's later or early republic.
Not really my area but in my opinion it's either late Qing or early Republic period.

I think it could be Japanese. The green sides with the cherry flowers say "not Chinese" to me as does the way the peony is painted.

I was wondering if it might be Japanese, too. It is quite large compared to all the tea caddies I have seen and it looks like there is glaze around the mouth where the lid would go.
I had an appraiser check it and they agreed with Mark's guess about the origin being Chinese with it being early republic period. The detail of the glazed mouth was inclusive as well, but its definitely different than general expectations with Chinese wares.
The green and cherry blossoms are weird though if it is the case, but Im not used to seeing wares from either side with paired full panel background colors, especially green, from famille noir centric patterns. Good point about the peony btw @shinigami
Look at the bottom and side brush work on the black, as opposed to the green, I think the black has been overpainted the original green, when famille noir became so popular, many museums have discovered their famille noir pieces did not start out famille noir, it is lovely.
@sharonp you're absolutely right about that part. The gilded line decorating the bottom between the foot and the glaze of the green is solid and acts as a defining barrier between the two. The black sides are disproportionate and not intact. I never would've caught this fact without your mention. I appreciate that insight a lot!
It's fascinating how trends invoke revisions of works to meet demand across history.
One last detail to point out to assist with future identifications of similar pieces;
The black around the cherry blossoms is filled in, the imagery has become rigid with the revision. The green backgrounded blossoms have smooth and careful application.
In order of application of painted coloring:
1. The green background
2. The cherry blossoms designs
3. The gold trim decoration
4. The revised black bodied background.
Makes me wish the lid was around still just to see how that looked too.
