I guess I could send pics to Peter to ask about his opnion and/or advice how to move further. But right now I'm going home because the library is closing ...
Came across another piece of wan shaped porcelain at this Sotheby’s auction.
@william That is a great looking brushpot, and while I have never seen one in this form, I have no difficulty believing it is genuine.
I could not say the same about the unusual Heritage vase (as you may remember I commented about the msyterious discovery).
This has been a year of enlightenment for me regarding what I consider a big shift in the taste/assessment of authenticity by the high-end collector's market. I wonder if this will be sustained, or if there will be a correction come next year.
@william I don't think I will be coming, sorry to say. My grandaughter's birthday has turned into a multi-day family event, so I'd quite literally have to fly in for a day, and fly out the next evening.
Nice to see another Qing dynasty piece with the swastika form and mouth part. That's the thing that make Freeman's vase really special. I think they might have set set the estimate a bit to high here, that's what went wrong because the square shape is not ideal for such vase. The one that sold for 7,9m had a rounded form. I'll need to check what the record is for one of square form. But it's still a mystery why they removed it form the online catalogues.
This is the one with the record sale price. Two similar vases has sold at the majors for less.

@avatar Nice to see another Qing dynasty piece with the swastika form and mouth part.
Where else have you seen this form of brushpot or other piece? I couldn't locate one when I Googled, and a lot of other junk comes up in the search given the shape.
@greeno107 I think that's in reference to Bill's reply, second from the top of this page.
Yes, it was. But now when we are talking about Freeman's I would like to share a case where it seems they have missed upon a related archaistic celadon vase with a Qianlong mark and likely of the period and potentially worth a million but sold off as Qing apocryphally marked for only $6000.
This is an identical vase at Christie's described as Qianlong mark and period and estimated and sold for a million.
In the lot essay an identical vase is mentioned and it is possibly the very same vase they are selling but it could also be the vase at Freeman's IMHO. Quote: "A celadon vase from the Stephen D. Winkworth Collection, possibly the present vase, is illustrated by S. Jenyns, Later Chinese Porcelain, pl. C., fig. 2."
A lavender-glazed example is also mentioned in the lot essay. I came across such a vase with a Qianlong mark when I was following and buying Chinese pieces from a Japanese seller at eBay. I remember I thought to myself that I really should buy that vase because it would probably be either a mark and period or a 19/20th apocryphally marked example but I thought the decoration looked too weird so it sold for a complete bargain. Then when I came across the vases at Christie's and Freeman's I was like... Damn! I wish I had bought it. Since then I bought almost everything Chinese when other bidders didn't show interest in them since the seller was lowering his opening bids $50 each time. I got modern fakes in from him both also very valuable material bought for bargains. The height of the lavender-glazed vase was around 40cm while the vases shown here are only 20cm and the handles were different. And then later I came across a similar lavender-glazed vase with the same handles but only 20-25cm at a north american auction and described as 20th century but possibly a mark and period example? Who knows for sure?
So if anyone here should happen to have a picture of the lavender glazed vase mentioned in Christie's it would be a great help and much appreciated. So I can see if it has the same kind of handles and what's the height of it? It's this one: "compare a pale lavender-glazed vase from the Warre Collection included in the International Exhibition of Chinese Art, London, 1935, Catalogue, no. 228"
I haven't got pictures of any of the two lavender-glazes vases unfortunately
So I'm going home for today since the library is closing but will probably continue my posting tomorrow. Goodnight.
This is an identical vase at Christie's described as Qianlong mark and period and estimated and sold for a million.
Close, but not identical. Slightly different size, and the color, translucency, and texture of the glaze (some of that could be the lighting). More importantly, we can't compare the mark and overall feel (weight/texture) of the porcelain. This is a famous 18th c. design with MANY modern copies floating around.
The Heritage example could just as well of been a 20th c. copy that someone over bid on, as a 19th c. And, given the demand for this type of piece, I don't believe a vase like this accidentally slipped through the fingers of eager buyers.

Calligraphy established itself as one of the major Chinese art forms during the Han dynasty (206 BCE - 220 CE), and for two millennia after, all educated men were expected to be proficient at it.
