I have question about an art Nouveau Vase from Crown Devon Fieldings. It is Art Nouveau to Art Deco Period.
Do you guys think this is handpainted:
Apologies, I know this is not in line with the forum but I am curious as Crown Devon had to compete with Japanese Imports of hand painted Ceramics and if this is hand painted then i think it is very well done.
Hi SD,
Not my area or interest.
However, there is the 'The crown Devon collection handbook' by Ray Barker published in 1991 1st end.
Said handbook or articles written by same could be useful to you in one way or another.
I don't know if your vase is hand painted or other by way of posted pictures etc. But they were made and hand painted during the 20th Century.
Company started in the 1870's and closed in 1982. During that time they had some notable artists including Kathleen Parsons.
To my eye your vase is probably 1912-40 and is desirable in the right market.
Hope this helps you out is some way.
Mark
Hi SD,
I believe these were printed and the hand finished - the design overpainted. More info on this process in the link below. I’ve always thought of them as the budget version of Royal Worcester Blush Ivory range. Here’s a link that has some info on how the Japanese market was influencing Royal Worcester designs:

Even Worcester porcelain is struggling in the UK at the moment, so poor old Crown Devon has been largely relegated to charity shops and car boot sales.

Hi Nic
Yes, I saw 3 Royal Worcester blush ivory vase at an auction for a mere £30- £50. So they can be found for peanuts in some auctions and may cost £100's in others. This Vase is a huge 18 inches High and 8-9 inches wide.
The Crown Devon 'Vellum' does appear to be printed to me also. In fact after studying this Vase just from the pictures and since there is no Makers mark. I am of the opinion it is in fact a Royal Worcester.
Crown Devon did make some stunning hand painted vase's that still fetch several hundred to thousands at Auction so they could have made this vase but it is considerably better quality and if hand painted then i do not think it is the usual Crown Devon 'Vellum' Or windsor.
My reasons I think it is Royal Worcester
The Base is not a crown Devon Base.
The Porcelain is much higher quality, Smooth white paste, compared to Crown devon 'vellum' which is always crackle and looks poorly.
The actual Painting ' Flower basket' looks hand painted and is of a much higher quality, opposed to the crown devon 'vellum' which has a very printed design look.
The Painting ' flower basket' on this vase has gold edgings which Royal Worcestor used and i do not see this on the Crown Devon vellum.
This is my logic.
At the moment you can find Japanese Noritake -Hand Painted Vase at reasonable prices. They can get high but still be found at lower prices. They are hand painted and many of them are from Art Nouveau and Art deco Periods, which brought huge competition to Companies like Crown Devon in the early 20th Century.
A good hand painted Crown Devon or Royal Worcester Vase can achieve goo sale prices. So logically these Japanese imports might well hold some good value into the future.
That said it is a very risky area. With a lot of competing examples from different companies but that competition saw some very beautiful craftsmanship from the British Companies.
So it is in fact my interest in Japanese that led me on this journey to now appreciate the British competition in hand painted Ceramics.
Here is a sample of some of the Noritake I have collected. The Japanese also made some beautiful ceramics to compete for a share in the western market and forced Crown Devon to really compete and Fieldings did go on to hire a famous artist and made some amazing Art Deco during that time.
Here are the Competition that started the war of the Ceramics
Yes, poor old Victorian and Edwardian pottery. No body wants it any more, and it is a shame that it’s popularity has fallen to such lows. Yes, the best of the best English can still fetch high prices, but any thing less than than that has very little value. It’s even worse for pottery made on mass for the average working class home. Most of it does seem to end up in thrift shops or on the discount shelves at antique shops.
The overly sentimental style of these wares are not what the market is asking for and I don’t see the demand increasing in the long term either.

I guess this is more a c1900 Japanese versus British discussion.
Based on what you and others have said Ronm it raises an obvious question. Is now not the time that we are entering a period of time where it will become a good opportunity to find authentic fully hand painted examples of Royal Worcester and Crown Devon. They have some excellent examples, and if they are signed by the artist then you have a good investment.
Many of these compete with high end Satsuma and in fact some of the Royal Worcester have craftsmanship that equal or exceed the finest of Satsuma.
As they say with any slump, find the very best.
