Hi all
I have this jar but not sure on the period or date,
Any advise much appreciated
thanks
richar
Hi,
These can be tricky to date. This doesn't look to be a really old example, but could we possibly have a photo of the mouth, please? I can't tell whether it is glazed or not.
Julia
hi
this is the mouth
thanks
Hi,
That was quick, thank you.
I am no expert on these, but I have had several. My feeling is that glazed openings are more recent than those with unglazed necks. I would say this is most likely a 20th c example, later rather than earlier. It may even be more recent than that. I will try to have a better look on a bigger screen, later.
There are a fair few around and people do collect these. Some of the early ones are very lovely but quite different in the decoration. The artists really captured a sense of sharp twinkling frosting. It is hard to explain but if you look at some pictures you will see what I mean.
Sorry my dating is so vague. I am sure someone will be along soon who can either correct me or be more precise.
Julia
Am now on the pc. I am still not sure, but I will scratch the suggestion of possibly later. It could be earlier, Birgit knows way more than I do about these things. What is so hard when looking for comparisons is that everyone selling them on ebay etc calls theirs 19th c (or even kangxi) and I am positive not all of them are.
Of mine, I have kept one small one that is very similar to yours in that it has a glazed neck, 2 circles on the base, same style of fairly nice decoration. It is smaller and has a slightly pointy foot rim, I haven't tried to sell it or given it away because it fascinates me and reminds me ( a good thing) how hard it is sometimes for beginners like me to know when something was made.
Hi Julia, you know more of these items than I, since I have never owned one, still waiting for a Kangxi one to come my way. As you said, Ebay is full of wrongly attributed and downright ugly examples, so searching for a good one is not really fun.
In this case the bottom could also be early 20th century but I don’t think it’s much later. Where are the plum blossom experts?
Birgit
Hi Richard,
I think, late 19th or early 20th century is about right. These jars were mass produced at that time. The decoration is also known as "Hawthorne pattern". Some pieces (from the late 19th century) also have an apocryphal four character Kangxi mark. The decoration of this jar is not the best quality. Even in this period, there are much better examples.
Chris
Not sure about this one - the foot could be early or late C20th , imo. And the uneven lines of cobalt at top and bottom maybe imply a later date?
Although these were always export jars , I see more of these appearing in the local curio shops , which suggests they are being produced now , not as fakes for ebay etc. , but for the local Chinese market. I see examples with both unglazed and glazed mouth rims.
Could you let us know the size of this jar?
tam
Hi Richard -
If possible, could you provide an image of the interior? ...
Agree with Tam regarding uneven cobalt lines, also there appears to be very little/no surface ware And the base glaze seems very ‘white’ - although this may be the images/lighting ...
Like Tam, I have seen numerous examples of such types in the HK curio shops over the last decade ...
Stuart
Hi Stuart
here is a photo inside the jar
thanks
richard
Hi Richard -
Thank you for providing the interior image ...
Not really my area, so I shall defer to Mark@imperialfinegems for his thoughts on whether this helps with an attribution to pre/post 1940's ...
Stuart
@Richard Leach
Hi Richard,
I am not an expert nor a collector of these types of wares. I have been scratching my head over this particular item. I am more into jades and republican period porcelain. Along with Japanese works.
The pictures posted are not definitive. I heed the opinions of respected members who have posted their opinions. It could be early 20th century or much later. I don't think it's 19th century.
Personally I think it's most likely a later example (post 1940's) for suggested reasons posted by both Tam18 and Ming1499. It's worth noting that the interior of these wares were scooped out by hand prior to about the 1940's. After that period mechanical machines were introduced.
If you can feel the inside and it is very even and smooth then it's probably modern. If it's rippled then it maybe earlier. I feel that the interiors bottom of your item has been manufactured.
Of course it's worth noting that a lot of the reproductions made today are made to resemble that old feel/look.
Perhaps submit it to Peter. I would be most interested.
Mark
