So some of you know my obsession with odd glazed tea bowls, so when I come across a weird one that I haven't seen before I usually buy it, then follow up with the internal thought that this might be getting out of hand.... haha.
Well here's another one, however it is a bit small to be a tea bowl, so perhaps sake? or it is related to my theory on who made it.
This thing is wacky.... Emerald green and maroon glaze on a greyish/ tan pottery that has what I assume is an iron red slip on it, and then is lowfired, so I guess Raku ware. There is metallic dust mixed into the green glaze and in a few spots it has bloomed through. I have never seen anything like it before.
In my wait for it to arrive from Thailand, I hunted through Colbase for Japan museums, THe suntory, morse and the freer as well and have come up with one possibility. Tokuzan. Now I could also be totally wrong and this is newer than I think, so some potter just playing with modern glazes, but I think there is age.
Tokuzan, a preist apparently, made strange sized and decorated tea ware in the first quarter of the 19th century, and heavily favored shigaraki ware. The only visual example I can find is a brazier at the freer, which I'll attach below. They describe it with copper and bronze in the glaze but the one picture doesn't show it.
it seems his pieces aren't marked usually so perhaps that's why I can't find more.
Has anyone seen anything like it before?

Very nice chawan! I can't say I have seen one like it. The green color is a head-turner. And the very thick glaze running down the sides is always something that I find attractive. The clay does look like Shigaraki. It certainly matches the example in the museum. Its either made in that style....or it is what it looks like. Often, the best indication is whether the object is as matte as the old example, or if the glaze is much shinier. But I would guess you know that already. I can't tell from the pictures. Great find, regardless. Even if it is not by the famous artist, it is still not contemporary.
I thought one line from your researched writings was blunt and funny...."his later work, bearing an incised mark, has but little merit". 🤣 Written in the late 19th, so it was rather contemporary work, at that time. Perspective is important.
