Hi, All
It was better weather last weekend, and I found a few things while driving out to go birdwatching.
The first is a teeny weenie little porcelain vase, less than 2" high. A little jewel! It is nicely done, and is fine white porcelain, and says "China" on the bottom. I am thinking 1920's, but am not sure why. Maybe PROC? Is this a snuff bottle, maybe? Is it just a tourist trinket?
The second is a planter, 8" high and 9.5" across, brightly colored, and with little or no shading--what shading there is, is fairly crude. But the colors are nice, and it is entirely hand painted. My first thought this was modern (I think I have seen that single red symbol on the bottom on modern pots) but the footrim is interesting. It is hand-cut, and has some kiln grit. The unglazed footrim is slightly pinkish-grey, except for the centerline, where it has been worn; there, it is snow white. There is some fritting on the upper rim. I found the same motif on a planter online, and it was early 20th century Nyonya Straits--but the shading on the flowers was much better in that example. I am guessing this is a modern copy of that? Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Charles
Hi,
I am not sure about the vase but the bowl is Japanese. The mark is one used by Yamatoku. Very attractive piece.
Julia
A lovely little vase that has a hand made look. Seems ok for Republic to me.
Birgit
I wonder if the fish bowl is Japanese for the Malaysian market. Looks like the palette was influenced by Nonya Straits stylings.
Todd
take it with a grain of salt
A lot of Yamatoku gets described as Chinese probably because of that look and some of it sells at Chinese prices.
I think this could be 1900 to 1920 but as this mark doesn't appear too often it is a bit hard to date precisely and research is hindered by the Chinese label.
Apparently, they are still making things today, not sure of the style of the more modern items but I have seen a plate of the typical type one associates with yamatoku described as being from the 1980s. That had a red mark on the base, a different one, but it is good to be aware of that because I would not have dated it so recently. I know they were still making similar items until 1930s and 40s but I didn't realise there were later pieces of that type. Having reassessed my own pieces, I think I have a more modern one. I wondered why it lacked the fresh quality of the earlier pieces.
When I moved recently, my only "loss" in the process was one of my Yamatoku plates, unfortunately not the newer one.
Hello,
Yamatoko porcelain is made today. Place's like etsy etc often have listings some of the sellers are honest with their dating. Yamatoko also supplied many decorators with blanks sometimes items can have impressed Yamatoko marks and the decorators mark which may cause confusion.
