Hi guys,
Could anyone help identify this vase please? As you could see there is a little note on the bottom (XIX and I believe XVIII).
I love the horse and tiger rider.
is it a 18, 19 or 20 century vase?
Many thanks
Dear Giovanni, I rarely contradict you, but the faces look rather modern to me. Especially the only lady situated at the top rim. And the bottom with dirt and old label looks suspicious. But I might very well be wrong.
Birgit
My first impression was also late 19th c, but after looking more closely, I am inclined to agree with Birgit that this is a later piece.
The faces look more like the 1920 ones that we saw on here a little while ago and I agree the base looks unnaturally dirty. That wouldn't get ingrained dirt from wear like a foot rim might, but although the rest of the vase is clean, this has been left dirty. The thick lines of dirt on the foot rim, above and slightly to the right of the writing on the base, also looks odd - particularly the curved ends.
More personally, for various reasons I find the overall design uncomfortable / unharmonious; one example being the heavy slabs of dark green tree foliage.
So, I will say 20th c but am not sure when.
At a quick glance without expanding the pictures one may believe this vase is a late 19th century example.
However, as already posted by Birgit the way the faces are drawn along with imo the dabbed trees illustrate that this vase is a modern reproduction. Even the inner foot rim has been cleverly done.
The overall look of the vase is very busy in my submission with what appears to be no natural flow on effect with regard to the depictions of the figures/other.
A large number of these high quality reproductions have hit the market in recent times. When I first saw one a year or so ago I got conned by its quality. Luckily I still did not buy it.
Just my thoughts.
Mark
Dear Birgit, Julia, Mark,
when I saw the pictures, my first reaction has been 20th century.
But then I uploaded the pictures and saw them in the natural large format and at my knowledge I am sure that it is 19th century, although not of the first half of the century.
There are many points indicating that dating to me.
BTW two of those points are just the faces (enlarge them and you will see that in the 20 century the faces were worst) and especially the foot/base. Never seen similar features during 20th century.
Regards
Giovanni

I must admit to thinking that it was a modern piece.
Almost a pastiche of Kangxi with little wear and too bright enamels.
I would expect something more like this, loosely painted and glazed.
Interested to see 19th c Yen yen Vases to compare with the Opening posters.
Vic
That was enjoyable to see how you guys worked it out and came to a concensus.
Dear Vic,
the vase that you have shown is typical of the same period. It is of lower quality under the point of view of the painting style.
The yenyen vase is of a different class, copying the Kangxi style, and those were made with a higher standard. The enamels are bright, especially the green. And the crowded composition too is typical.
Regards,
Giovanni
These are Guangxu famille verte,Christie’s.
I still think the OP’s Vase is modern, just personal opinion.
Vic
Thanks for correcting me, too. Or I should say educating! 😀 😊
I have now done as Giovanni did and downloaded the pictures. What was noticeable was the green line looks drippy and uneven at the top and smoother at the bottom. I would have expected that to be the other way round. Sorry to show my lack of understanding but is that some effect of the firing? Like when rain runs up the windscreen on moving cars?
Thank you all for sharing you know-how. I am always amazed at how everyone on here is so passionate and keen to understand and learn. Great forum!
