You might have seen this on Ebay. I bought the lot. This Phoenix plate appears Japanese to me but the reverse looks Chinese with a Kangxi mark. Plate is about 10” diameter. Is this one of those 19th century homage pieces made in Japan in the 19th century?
The plate is Chinese in my opinion and has a rather messed up Jiaqing mark, which is not uncommon on provincial pieces. The mark was also used in the late 19th C. .
We did a quick post with examples of marks a while back, here's THE LINK
It's an interesting plate.
Best Peter
Peter
Dear Teryjaki,
I agree with Peter, you have a Chinese blue and white plate. It has a minyao (popular ware) seal mark of Jiaqing, and appears to me to be mark and period, so your plate was likely made between 1796 and 1820.
Note the three lingzhi fungus designs that are painted on the outer side. I have seen similar designs often featuring on Qianlong minyao wares.
Best wishes,
Alan
There is a similar reverse design on a plate offered by that ecliptic_art person on enay:
Her's has 4 of the little fungi.
Julia
Dear Julia,
Very occasionally, ecliptic_art offers a genuine piece, and I think this is one of those rare moments when she has done just that. I find no difficulty in accepting that this is a mark and period item.
You might like to compare a recent auction held by qing-period, an eBay seller whom everyone would agree is consistently reliable, for a piece that has now ended:
You will see the same lingzhi design on the reverse.
Best wishes,
Alan
Morning, Alan!
Thank you, I did wonder if it might be genuine despite the misgivings over some of her pieces as I felt the enamels were nice. I would have hesitated to bid, though, because of her reputation.
Not that I am going to having seen that the other plate didn't sell at the price it reached! Wonder what his reserve was .....
Best wishes,
Julia
Good morning, Julia,
It all rather depends on how much you like the dish and would be prepared to pay for it. At least on this particular occasion, I think you could feel comfortable that the item that you were bidding on was authentic.
Personally, I would have thought that if you were to bid to, say, 400 and got it, that would be a good deal from your point of view, given that qing-period wanted more than the 850 his dish achieved without making its reserve. It's probably not wise to reveal publicly here what your maximum bid might be just in case ecliptic_art is watching what's being said about her items on this site! If she knew, she could manipulate the bidding on her dish in such a way as to force your bid up to the highest amount she knew you were prepared to pay. Yes, that would be dodgy dealing, but I regret to say we're talking here about an eBay seller who demonstrably misleads bidders, either by design or by ignorance.
Alan
Thank you, Alan. I have been looking at some of her other items and just don't feel comfortable at all, even if this one is the real thing.
Best wishes,
Julia
Good to hear Alan. Its just that the phoenix threw me. It seemed Japanese in style. Thank you.
