I have this quite large (39cm = nearly 15'') calligraphy brush with cloisonne handle.
I am not sure about it's age. Republic period? Late Quing?
Quite unusual to find a brush this size with cloisonne handle.
What do you think?

I think this is quite recent - these large brushes are produced in huge quantities now, and the brass/bronze details at both ends make me think it's not so old. The cloisonne panels look quite old , and have wear and pits, but I think this effect can be produced /simulated in new items

These types of wares are mass produced in China and sold for little money. I like you did a # of years ago buy a # of said, thinking the same as you only to find out other. The detail in said is quite crude.
I have posted a picture of one of the brush's I bought (originally about 6 in total a mix of metal and stone). Thankfully they were little money then.

Many thanks for your comments, appreciate it a lot. I absolutely agree with your opinions with one minor remark from me - the whole enamel surface and the way it was done in general, even the feel of it is quite far from what I can recognise as recent cloisonne. You could easily spot that comparing with your's brush Mark (thank you for sharing that), it's glossy and indeed it looks recent, while mine appears to me dating from a previous period with different manufacturing methods. All this pores, small crackles, faded colours, wear - that's quite typical for cloisonne that is at least 50 years old, or older. All those later enamel objects have that clearly visible glaze surface. I am not an expert in this field at all but there had to be a major change in the enamel compound over the years. Older cloisonne items are missing that glossy effect. It appeared somewhere in People's Republic time, around 80's - the enamel changed. Maybe it's just the matter of time and the glossy surface was there before on older items when they were made, however the structure of enamel, the paste is different as well - earlier enamel seems more sandy and tense to me, while the later one is like a surface of thick and polished car paint. These are just my observations of course, please don't think that I am forcing my view regardless your valued opinions. I think you now that I absolutely love all sort of criticism - at the end it's the main reason we are all here - to deliberate on age and quality of items and to exchange opinions.
Please let me know what you think of it, I look forward to this discussion as I think cloisonne is quite interesting field (personally I love those items) and it's gaining more interest. Have you noticed that even Bonhams started selling early 20th C champleve vases (cloisonne on bronze body) for very modest prices (as less as £125-£300) that normally would never find their ways into the auction before?

I do like such wares and I think it is misunderstood and underpriced.
I was not aware about Bonham's sales of said. Thanks for that information.
Because I am using a mobile phone (cheap) my pictures vary greatly from item to item. The brush I have posted is not shiny or bright. It is actually quite dull, but the lenses says other. Had the same problem with a white/lavender merian jade figure that turned a bright blue lavender. It made it look like glass or resin/plastic. That's why I did not post same.
Would like to hear/start a thread on cloisonné if there are members who are like minded. If memory serves me correct Short Dong and Alan Fletcher also expressed similar ideas about a year or so ago but it sort of died.
