Can anyone identify or tell me more about this type of Vase. 12 inches tall.
Possibly Republic but the pictures are not good enough to see the people clearly. The bottom looks ok for Republic.

Thanks Brigit,
That was my guess too :). I cannot get better picture as i do not have access to the Vase.
There’s even the possibility that the faces are of a type that was painted 1870-1890, but that’s hard to see.

I would have thought with the Chinese Symbol ( in gold with a blue back ground) on the shoulders of the vase it would make it a candidate for republican or later as this was more common in later Pieces.

I have purchased this Vase and will post better Images when I receive it. I was a little over zealous in getting it, and it has a small crack on the rim, but other than that is in excellent condition.
I paid £22 + £4.50 postage, and i am not sure why I wanted something i know so little about. I guess it is a mystery buy.
I got some better pictures. You might have a better idea from these images of the faces. The quality is not great, and so much so i would be amazed if you told me this is early republican. I suspect it is late republican. I took a risk, in buying this. However I recently got a beautiful 18th century small Chinese bowl that was immaculate, that i took for a Newman and it was only £5. So I like to take a little risk now and then.
I used my Samsung S7 as my Sony DSC battery is dead. I suspect the Quality is how i upload the pictures. Using Smart phone i upload to discord and then save from there. My camera connects to HD and gives better quality.
The base of the vase
I can't make up my mind, I can see there is a hint of 19th c to some of it but I think the orange is wrong for that, but I can't see it being later than maybe 1960-ish, either. That isn't really terribly helpful, is it. ?
I like the pictures on it, they are nicely "human" if you see what I mean.

I think when we usually find the discussion ends in this quandary it generally indicates we are trending toward the 1950's- 1960's when they did make a huge and variable amount of product.
It has some quality to the display and is large at 12 inches but overall is an ugly vase as while some details look rather fine they then have to contrast with stiff colours and shapes.
Julia,
I got this also. Do you think it is genuine 18th century Mandarin.
Congratulations, dear Short Dong, the vase is neither Republic nor modern but from Guangxu, around 1880. Maybe the painting quality is not the highest, but as Julia already noticed, the people are lively painted, not stiff as they would be on a modern item. The faces with the bent long noses and the double lower eyelids are so typical that Tommy Eklöf has a special category (q17) for them. For the price you paid a real bargain.
The mandarin bowl is lovely, late Qing around 1780.
Birgit
Not sure about the bowl, the footrim and the black enamel are worrying for me if you hope for an 18th century dating , closer pictures of the base and foot would be helpful
The decoration looks fine in style i would say and it might be OK
Carl
The persons on the bowl look fairly typical for their time - sorry in my above post I wanted to say late Qianlong, not late Qing. Maybe even a bit earlier than 1780, for I found this lovely 1760 lady that looks a lot like the one on the bowl.
By the way, Julia, don't you think the person in pink watching the boy painting could be a little girl?

Wow,
I have a 18th century bowl that might be a girl. That would be cool.

That is fantastic. I had resigned myself to it being 1950's.
Thank you so much for taking the time to research this Brigit. The vase does have quality but it is an awful looking vase 🙂 There is an Auction for Asian Art at one of the bigger Auction houses H & W in the city in May. I might Consign the vase with a low reserve but I wonder if they will believe it is Guangxu. While they have expertise, they might not have the specific expertise to appraise it to such fine detail. I could I guess see if Professor Alan is going and ask him if he can appraise it for them if they are unable.
My reasoning is that i do not like it but it must be at least rare as i do not see many about which might make it valuable to someone. Then again I could enhance my collection.
🙂 Brigit you have made may day better.
