Dear all,
I would be grateful for your help. We have here what looks like a pair of Meissen cups dated to around 1723. However the gilding, decoration and form does not look correct. I believe that they may be Chinese exports emulating the early Meissen Chinoiserie figure style (pre 1723). Has anybody seen anything like them before and can it be confirmed that these are indeed Chinese? And if so, what date?

Hi Ricky, these are interesting little cups. I don’t think they are 18th century Chinese because of the foot. They don’t seem to be Meissen either because the gold decoration would be more elaborate. The very old things didn’t have a mark. The gold painter sometimes applied a number though I haven’t seen one personally. It’s probably from another European manufacture later in the 18th century.

18th century Meissen and this is what those gilders numbers look like. Also notice the triple iron-red lines.

Thank you for showing, Ricky. I just finished reading Pietsch: Early Meissen Porcelain, which is probably the best book about this field with several hundred examples, but unfortunately it doesn’t show the back sides and marks.
What is your earliest piece? I never managed to buy anything before 1735.

@shinigami hi there, this is actually the oldest piece of Meissen that I own. You will notice that there are no blue cross swords which were added to Meissen porcelain from around 1723 which this saucer dates to. Actually Meissen landscape scenes of this period are far rarer than those decorated with chinoiserie scenes.I do
own other pieces of Meissen porcelain that date before 1740 and I have a particular interest in the harbour scenes, some of which you can see in one of the photographs.
