I purchased this recently it was carved in China and purchased in Honk Kong as a tourist piece it’s contemporary. Look at the work everything is hand carved of ox bone. It is so micro carved one piece is smaller than a ball point pen. I figure there is over a hundred thousand carved pieces. Even contemporary pieces can be amazing.

I have box with similar decoration, but I think mine was was carved in India as it has an Indian temple on the front. It is made of teak, but looks similar in a lot of ways to your piece. Here are a few photos of my box. Note that the triangular pieces on my box appear to be ivory. Are you sure yours is Chinese and not from India?
Note that my box currently resides n my mantle, and contains some Very Important Rocks from a Greek Beach (VIRGBs), including one decorated by a Follower of Picasso!

I think you may be correct Charles. I didn't look closely before, but now you mention it, I can see the pictures appear to be polo players like the ones in Mughal miniatures.
@kirby13 yes the piece has documentation from Hong Kong. Now as for what market it was intended for that’s different story. But Polo was played in all of Asian the clothing in this piece is Chinese style not India style clothing not even Mediterranean.
That's a twist if the Chinese have taken to copying Indian Mughal style, the Indians were copying cloisonne. It could have been made in India and ended up in Hong Kong, lots of foreigners, especially globe trotting Brits have lived in Hong Kong. Sharon
I guess your right anything can end up in Hong Kong. Unless it’s marked never know where it might have been. It’s still an impressive box.

Your chess board is made in high quality. As noted by Sharon P it is inlaid with genuine ivory along with other materials.
I am scratching my head as to whether it was made in china or India.
I would need further high quality pictures including the base.

It's also inlaid but I am unable to determine the material by way of your images.
