I am not familiar with how to precisely assess this horse, but it does feel to me like it could be Chinese. It has significant damage with two broken legs. I have the part to fix one of them, but the other is missing. The mane blends smoothly into the body. It has spur marks and seems to be nicely sculpted. Any insights are welcomed.
It reminds me of an early 19th century Export horse figure I saw at sotheby's Ill try and find the link. I really like the modelling of the mane and head.
For the life of me I Cannot find the aforementioned link. If i recall correctly it was late 18th century, and the features were more rounded and the tail was straight.

I sold a pair of these horses a year or so ago. Late 19th c. Sorry....didn't keep my pics, but I seem to remember one of the big auctions sold a pair, too. Do some Googling... you'll probably find them.
It certainly does not look chinese to my eyes or if it is it most be quite modern.
I was thinking late 19th century export.... was the pair you sold so articulated?

He has a lovely face! I am not certain it is an old piece, or even Chinese, because pretty much every ( bar miniatures) pottery horse I have seen is on a base. The supports are unusual, too, especially with the underside of the feet unglazed.
I hope someone can find the pictures of ones similar to yours.
@jbeer2121 Yes, but now that I am remembering correctly, I only bought one of the pair because a leg was broken on one.
I know fairly certainly that the pair dates before 1950 because I bought my horse while in Cuba, so antiques there generally date prior to then, and as required to bring the piece back to the USA, I had the piece inspected for 'cultural value' by the Cuban antiquities department (who actually seemed quite knowledgable about Chinese porcelains strangley enough), and they concurred with the dating of late 19th/ early 20th c.
@greeno107 Was the mane on yours done in the same way, where it blends into the body smoothly?
@jbeer2121 The older export horses that I've found so far that are in a standing pose seem to have a free hanging tail and mane, which is a bit different than mine. Like this example: https://www.sothebys.com/en/auctions/ecatalogue/2018/important-americana-n09805/lot.530.html
@johnshoe I don't recall spur marks, but that doesn't mean they weren't there. The mane appears the same, only mine was left white.
@greeno107 Okay thanks! And was the tail attached to the body or did it hang freely with space away from the body?
