I have gotten this plate, I got it because it is a decent size 27cm. An impressive size. At a fair price also.
The age of the Plate, I am not so certain about. It has a dark tinge to it. I am guessing it is early republican or a typical Canton export.
Hi, short dong ,
yes 27cm is a very good good size and it's an attractive dish , with a nicely painted border , and not over-fussy, imo
it looks to be as you say typical famille rose export , dating I would guess from the C19th, rather than republican , but could you post a picture of the whole base ?
(by the way , I'm sure you're aware of the meaning of your user name , but it jars a little every time I have to type it ! Or maybe dong is only an english euphemism?)

No I was not 🙂 ?
It was based on the Beano Club password 'Ding Dong' and Ding rhymes with Ming and Dong was a Chinese emperor or i found one that was and now i cannot find him.
I am now just googling it. I just picked the most comical emperor name 🙁 . I was unaware of what it meant in Chinese until I googled more about the Dong and found Dong Xian. So it is idiomatic for a Chinese 'homosexual' because of the Emperor Ai sharing a straw mat with Dong Xian awoke to find his sleeve under Dong's sleeping head and apparently cut his sleeve rather than awaken Dong.
Dong was apparently an obscure unknown civil servant that rose to the most powerful position due to his sleeping with the boss.
However there was another Dong ..Dong Zhuo and i think that is where I originally found the Dong. He deposed a sitting emperor and placed a puppet emperor in place, and ruled thereafter and was apparently very cruel and tyrannical.
I guess the secret code DING DONG has a very different meaning in China.

I look forward to posting them when i get the dish 🙂 Still in the post. Fingers crossed it arrives in one piece,
Hi S-D , actually I meant the english usage , not chinese , when I was younger dong was a very common slang... maybe you can google for what,....
tam
Dear S-D,
Your plate is an attractive, mid-nineteenth century famille rose export product. It's much earlier than the Republic.
I may perhaps see you at the James Adam Asian sale tomorrow. I'm also going tonight to the reception. You should call in to that too if free.
Regards,
Alan
Hi Alan
I might see you at the reception tonight then because i am not sure i can make the Nov 5th. As for some reason i have several appointments all falling on Nov 5th.

Ha 🙂
I am going to take this up with DC Thomas the publisher of Beano comics. I had never thought when I got my Gnasher badge and Dennis the menace badge and fan club wallet that it was a Chinese bone smuggling conspiracy.
Dear S-D,
I think the reception starts at around 6pm, and the auction isn't on the 5 November, it's tomorrow, 3 November, at 12 noon. So now you have no excuse not to part with more money! If you do decide to go to the reception, I have a spare copy of the catalogue that I'm happy for you to have, it will save you buying one.
Judging by what I see in some of the lots in this sale, I will need to try to keep a restraining padlock on my wallet. I understand there is a lot of Chinese interest already registered, but the export wares might be more widely within reach.

Great, Well i will see you tomorrow...i will be late, i always am. I had it ticked in my head of the 5th of Nov. Ok great, I was really looking forward to going and had so many appointments Nov 5th that it was looking unlikely.
I have to collect some antiques from Hermann and Wilkonson this afternoon, and so it will be easier to go to the auction tomorrow rather than the reception this evening. I have no intention of buying anything, but i will browse the catalouge before just in case, there is a bargain.
Alan
Are you sure that reception is on tonight. Viewing ends this afternoon at 5pm according to their website.
DATE - 03 NOVEMBER 2018
STARTS AT - 12:00 PM
Tuesday 30th October 1pm - 5pm | Wednesday 31st October 10am - 5pm | Thursday 1st November 10am - 5pm | Friday 2nd November 10am - 5pm
Dear S-D,
Yes, I'm quite sure. It's a by invitation reception, hence it's not advertised on the website, but I could get you in if you intend to go. There's also a talk as part of the evening on Asian art (emphasis on Japanese material) by one of the new curators at Chester Beatty. I don't know when she's scheduled to speak, but the reception runs from 6pm till 8pm, so her talk will obviously happen within that time frame.
Alan
Dear S-D,
a ps - I won't be online now to read messages for the rest of the afternoon, so if you decide to go this evening after all, and if there's any problem at the door, say that I said it was fine for you to attend.
A.
I think late 19thC.
