Hi all,
Could I get an opinion on this cup? I can't for the life of me figure out if it's antique or modern, or hand-painted or transfer-printed. It looks to me to be a Qianlong nanking style cup, but then there's some areas that are suspect such as some of the leaves of the trees. Here's a couple photos:
Kindly,
John
Hi John, to me it looks like a late 18th century Nanking cup. The gilt rim was applied in Europe to enhance the value.
Birgit
Thank you, Birgit! I appreciate the input, as always 😀
I can see why you think it may be transfer printed but unfortunately I can't get close up enough to see. If you look at the inner border, there should be some signs there like mis-alignment or extra-blurriness - there may also be blue smudges where there is no decoration. All I can see that may indicate printing is a missing patch at the side of the tree in the second last photo.
The border looks very like English transferware but obviously the idea was to look Chinese so that may well mean nothing if you see no evidence of transfer printing. Sorry, I am not able to be more helpful.
Just seen Birgit replied. That's good. 👍
Hi John,
I have several of these and Birgit is correct; yours is authentically 18th c.
However, be aware that there are fakes of this pattern out there. I have a small bowl that I thought was original until it arrived and I realized it was transfer printed. You can tell not only by the crease mark on the pattern but also in a way that it isn't blurry so much as spotty. Blurriness can be seen on originals but the spottiness is a sign of the transfer process. Also, the gilding it a little over the top. (I still like it though and it was quite cheap so no loss!)
Regards,
-Steve
Thanks Julia! I have to admit, I'm not completely sold on this cup being completely handpainted. I'm not sure if there were any 18th century nanking that was transfer printed, but there are some suspicious areas in my opinion, like the fingerprint smudge on the inner border, some missing splotches, where the design is missing (small and few), and as you say extra-bluriness in some spots, but it's made worse by the fact that a some of it looks handpainted with brushstrokes. I am currently handling it alongside a transferprinted Japanese plate and there's an obvious difference though.
Thank you Steve! I really appreciate the comparison photos! I can see now that I mistakenly considered some flaws in the painting as a sign for transferprinting. I will be on the lookout for creasemarks and splotchiness like that in the future. Also, I can see why you like that bowl. I really like the gilding on it, even if it may be over the top. I attached a better photo of the problem areas that confused me:
Kindly,
John
The decoration is so intricate, isn't it? The skill and work that went into these often astounds me!
@steve, It's shocking that these artisans were able to achieve such a high level of uniformity and intricacy at such a small scale. I can't even get my pencil to be as sharp as the tiny motifs on the borders. I can't imagine painting at that level. I love it!
