Hi everyone!

Well, I have gone on a buying spree of oriental pottery and porcelain items recently... The latest acquisition is this lovely Chinese blue and white bowl. When I viewed it at the auction house prior to the sale, I really liked the very thick glaze. The condition was really good and the price OK (75 British Pounds including the premium), so I got it. It is 4.5" wide and 2.25" tall.

I think I am 99% sure this is a Ming Dynasty bowl, but since I have little experience with Chinese porcelain items, I would appreciate the thoughts of more experienced members. I would also be grateful if someone could possibly provide a more specific period within the entire dynasty age.

Hi,

I am kind of the opposite, I feel 99% sure it isn't Ming.  The figures look too stiff and precise, I think the base is wrong, the colour (blue and tone of glaze) may also be wrong - to me those are more reminiscent of 19th c kitchen Qing but even then, I find the decoration and base may not be correct and it is quite shiny.

However, to be more positive, I know very little about this area so hopefully Stuart will look in and give an opinion that I can learn from, too.

Fingers crossed!

Julia

@julia

Thanks for the reply! Hmm, it seems this gamble might not have paid out, haha! I guess we will have to wait for someone more knowledgeable to provide us with a possible date. I am glad that my post can help someone out alongside me!

Like Julia I’m not convinced it’s even 19th century. Glaze, style, bottom and the black spots remind me of a small tea cup of mine, a modern piece, $5 on Aliexpress. Did the auction describe it as Ming?

@shinigami

Thanks for your reply.

Nope, they were elusive to say "antique". This auction house is quite notorious for its descriptions and valuations... It works both ways. They give some really low valuations on some nice items, whereas they sell some other items completely misdescribed and with a very high estimate. I have experienced both ends, so I am well aware of that. I buy quite regularly and know what to expect...Hence, it was a pure gamble and I knew it. I got some other lovely pieces(including silverware) from that auction, which I sold on eBay for a good profit. I guess if it a modern piece, I will take my hit/losses and move on.

Hi Evangelos -

For comparison to show the wide variety found in such wares ...

Attached images of late Ming figural painting styles, glaze/blue tones and footrim finishes ...

1, Jar/cover dated to Wanli, Nanchang City Museum Coll ...

2, Large bowl, D. 32.8cm, dated to Tianqi period, Tianjin Museum Coll ...

3/4, two jars, both attributed to Tianqi period, first Wuyusn Country Museum and second Gao’an County Museum Coll’s ...

5, Bowl with dear amongst landscape design, attributed to Tianqi period, Jingdezhen Ceramic Museum Coll ...

6, Jar, attributed to Chongzhen period, Jingdezhen Ceramic Museum Coll ...

7, bowl with landscape design, attributed to Chongzhen period, Jingdezhen Ceramic Museum Coll ...

Note the differences in painting style, application of cobalt, glaze tone and base/footrim finish compared to your bowl, all very different ...

Concur with Julia and Birgit, based on the images I don’t think your bowl is Ming, but would need to handle to confirm ...

Hi Evangelos -

For comparison:-

Attached images of a small bowl been offered for sale by Shangrila in this week’s newsletter ...

The design on your piece is, probably, based on/inspired by this exterior composition ...
