I bought this tureen today. Is this tureen from the first half of the 19th century? Could someone help to establish to value? I've been looking at past auctions ( christies, bonhams) and notice the value of these export pieces have increased a lot lately. Thank you
Yours is a slightly odd request - the value of the piece is surely what you just paid for it, no? Or maybe there is some reason why you think you paid less than market value ?
I would date this to late C18th , or early C19th.
tam
hi tam18, I bought it from a local antique store who didn't know much about it. Not even sure they knew if this was chinese or japanese. I was not very expensive, probably a fraction of what it would sell to a collector by a dealer or an auction house. I submitted it the sothebys this morning, I'm waiting for their answer. I was hoping someone who knows the market could tell me about the market value.
Hi judging buy your pics it is very difficult to date said item.
On the surface it would appear to be from the late 19th century.
I would be interested in what sotheby's reply is on said age etc.
Mark
yes , let us know the outcome with Sothebys.
My feeling is the shape and colour of the footrim makes it earlier.
There is some rubbing of the gilding, and the decoration is perhaps not top-draw; for example the birds and deer are not very artistically done. Still, if it's cheap it's definitely a good find. These tureens are not easily found nowadays, and do sometimes feature in high end export porcelain auctions.
tam
I'll keep you updated on sothebys reply. If they say they are not interested it means they believe it is worth less than 5000 usd. I'm thinking it might be worth more.... I've attached a photo of a tureen sold at christies 5 years ago. It sold for 5,250usd. In my opinion the piece I bought is more collectible, but the one sold at christies looks in better shape.
Here's one that sold at skinners in 2016, with some damage, for 450 dollars
tam
Maybe send pics to christie's/bonhams at the same time.
Sotheby's are very difficult to deal with at the best of times.
My opinion on age is only based on the limited pic's posted. So Tam may be correct and I stand corrected.
Mark
I know the name of the auction house can make a good difference on the price it sells for. Maybe the piece I bought isn't worth sothebys time. But the decoration on the tureen sold at skinners look like 20th century canton famille rose imitation in my opinion. I see vases with identical decorations all the time , the difference in colors makes easy to identify. Often having stamped qianlong mark on unglazed bottom. Probably post revolution or late republic
I think the buyer of the Christies tureen seriously overpaid, unless it was unusually large and imposing. Maybe you could do a search on ebay sold listings to find similar examples to yours.
tam
I think he overpaid too (even for $3000-3500 which is christies market evaluation), the tureen was 26cm wide, not imposing at all. Look at this one, 10 years ago these would be worth a few hundred dollars at best The value of export wares has increased lately. You'll never see such prices on ebay. Big auction houses is always a preferable option if you can.
Could you post a closeup picture of the people? They are a sometimes good clue to determine the age.
Birgit
Yeah that 2012 one is deceptive because you get 47 pieces for 20,000 dollars, not jut the three items in the photo!
Here's one from last year , many pieces for 4000 dollars, but frankly some are poor quality and all have slightly different decoration. Still not great value for money, even for 220 pieces!
tam
Hi,
A question, rather than a statement: doesn't the grit and this kind of foot rim suggest late 19th maybe even early 20th century? I also would like clearer pictures of the woman, all I can make out is that their hair is quite flat and unadorned. Which probably means something.
Best wishes,
Julia
Could be true about the kiln grit , but you can also see that on earlier export pieces , especially the bigger pieces, maybe (?)
The orange peel surface on the base may also indicate C19th or later, but the footrim seems very white to me and carefully cut and shaped, so more like what you would expect on an earlier piece.
