Hello fellow members!
Hope you are all doing well and have found a lot of lovely items!
It's been a while since my last visit here and as always I would like to kindly ask for your opinions. What do you think of this chest? Looks like late Qing to me. What are your thoughts, do you like it? It has this nasty crack on that lovely pair of dogs...
Appreciate all your comments.
Kind regards
Adrian

Hi Adrian,
Without size and a view of the interior I would suggest based solely on the carving style therein that said chest would date from @ 1930+.
Unable to determine the type of wood from pictures.
Mark
Hi Adrian,
Wow, that’s a nice one. I can’t speculate on the age, but the dogs look a lot like Pekingese.
Best, Todd
take it with a grain of salt
Hello,
Thank you for your comments gents.
Mark, sizes are 69 x 34 x 39 cm. I am not 100% sure about the wood as well. It could be from early 20th C, I don't deny, I have found plenty of similar ones from the period you have mentioned as they are quite common, yet they appear a bit younger then mine, please take a look at his example:

I attach photos you have missed in my 1st post, please find them below.
Todd: I agree and I must say this panel I like the most, such a shame it's damage, however shouldn't be a massive challenge to fix it.
Thank you for your answers guys, appreciate it a lot!

I’ve ‘handled’ a few of these and they’re almost always made from camphor wood. In fact, we refer to them as ‘camphor chests’ in these parts.
The camphor in the wood acts as a natural deodoriser keeping whatever’s stored in there fresh. The camphor also acts as an antibacterial preventing mould etc. Even after a century, you can usually still smell the camphor.
Nic
Hi Nic,
Many thanks for your comment. You gonna laugh now, I have quite quickly learnt that they are being called 'camphor chest' but I never associated it with the wood they are made of and I was scratching my head - why on earth they are called like that? I'm and idiot obviously 🙂
Would you agree it's Honk-Kong, circa 1930? That would be quite fair to date for the customers, don't you think?
Thank you one more time for sharing your knowledge, appreciate it a lot!

I think your dating is fair, Chinoiserie was all the rage at that time, antique Chinese vases were being lamped and furniture being lacquered. Bamboo furniture was also very popular.
Hong Kong is definitely a contender. But I suppose that there would’ve been more than one centre of production or export? Then, like now, things were copied when there was an insatiable market.
Nic
These were also produced in ca. the 1980s; we bought one to keep bed linen in. It looked exactly like the one above sold as 1920s, even the metal lid support and catch/lock are pretty much identical. Yours looks much older than these, though and could well be 1920/30s.
I have another upstairs (not as old as yours) which I bought cheaply as it needs repair. Camphor is a strange smell but I really like it.
Hi Julia,
Many thanks for your comment and spot on observations, it's amazing we can share the knowledge and experience. I fully agree regarding the age. There is quite a lot of those chests on the market and some of them are looking much younger then they are dated in the ads. I bet if I restored mine it would look decades younger then it really is, so maybe some of them went under the knife of DIY restorers? Most likely you're right about the reproduction in the 80's. I love to fix old furniture but only if I want to keep it for myself and use it on a daily basis, otherwise it's just a time-trap 🙂
I have another funny item, a travelling folding table, Chinese, circa 1900. Someone have put a nasty blue coat on it! I love it, but that colour... people are telling me to fix it but I am in a process of finding the right product I could finish it with. I will post it later also to see opinions regarding the age.
Enjoy your Sunday!
Adrian
