I'm having some trouble judging if this charger (12 inches) is new or old :/ It looks Chinese to me (but I could be way off). The mark is in a weird spot (which makes me think that it might be a recent copy), but the footrim looks like it has some age. I apologize for the crappy pictures.

Hi Michael: My guess is that this charger is new. I don't know the Chinese marks but, as you point out, having one to the side is most unusual. The colors and pattern look like nothing I have ever seen before. So my conclusion is the charger is new and of undetermined country of origin. Did you buy this?

The colors looked kinda like a Famille Verte palet to me, but it doesn't look quite right, does it. Could be the light that makes the colors look off. The charger is something I found for sale, and the other items the seller has, are also pictured badly (but none of the other items are Asian), so I figured the seller just has a crappy camera. Could it be for the Middle East market? The border gives off a bit of a Mideast vibe, at least that was what I thought when I first looked at it.

I agree this does not look Chinese , but the off-centre mark is typical for Japanese items , and the mark is 'daming chenghua .....' which is often found on Japanese porcelain of the late C19th or early C20th. The colours also look Japanese to me, so I would think this is early C20th Japanese. The back and footrim , as you say , look quite old.

I don’t think its new. The foot rim has some age, as you say. So, why put such an odd mark, way off center, if you are going to fake an old foot rim? Not logical to me, so I am guessing it is old or oldish. (My usual caveat, I am a novice). And the painting looks to be decent quality.

I believe your charger is Japanese with Chinese markings.
The design is known as tsubaki or red camillia.
The criss cross design gives its origin away.
The tsubaki in Edo period represented a noble death. In more recent tines a symbol of love.

It strikes me as Chinese porcelain made for the Japanese market , It has an 18th century look about it for me but it would need more detailed photo's to be examined from someone with more knowledge than me to be certain of age .
Thanks for all the replies! Seems consensus is most in favour of this being either Japanese or for the Japanese market. There is a close up of the rim, but still not as sharp as I would prefer. Not sure if it could be helpful or not. I'll see if I can get the seller to take a couple of better pictures.

Just noticed an error within the six character mark. Although the reign mark “Cheng Hua” was during the Ming period, the mark mistakingly identifies the period as “Da Qing” for “Great Qing.” A not so obvious mix-up.

Well spotted, George. I looked at that mark and didn't notice at all.
Mark and Tam are right, no chances at all for being it Chinese, it is Japanese.
