Here is an example of the kind of thing seen all over eBay, sometimes with wildly extravagant claims about age and value, however, some years ago I did buy this one very cheaply indeed because I liked the way it looked ... and that's around about it. Still, I am curious about it because it does have flecks of iron coming through (indicating age?) and the surface looks to be genuinely scratched up after years of long use. Close inspection of the surface scratches indicates to me these are not fake ageing marks. There is a close-up of such scratching provided below. It stands about 6.5inches high. 5 inches wide and 3 inches deep.
Nevertheless, I would be fascinated if someone could provide an opinion. Parts of the construction look poor, but the painting looks very fluid especially the cranes (?) and the flowers... not sure what flowers they are. No glaze to the 'base' interestingly.

Shaun,
I can see why you like this item, can’t help much with info but I see enough skill in the brush work, especially in the flowers, and enough faults in condition indicating some deal of age. I like it as well and would put it out for display.
George
Hi Shaun,
Lovely piece to my eyes. Pretty sure the bird is not a crane...beak is not long enough, wings too short, should have long legs trailing behind it, etc. Looks more like a duck, although that doesn’t seem exactly right either. Beautifully drawn, regardless. The disclaimer being that I am a novice.
Todd
take it with a grain of salt
Hello Shaun
I have been look at the history of theses and one i look at from 1860 to 20th century
where glaze on the bottom the hole was needly cut out. I found one from 1850 that matches
your top holes design they didn't show the bottom.it was painted different like your it hand
done. The painting and ware to me look it look earlier than that the ware look real.
Sorry I couldn't help more
john
Hi,
I have recently seen something else (a vase?) with flowers painted the same way. If I can remember where I will post a link as that may help date this.
Can't say much more other than your item is very pretty; I like it a lot.
Best wishes,
Julia
Hi,
I can't see the vase I was refering to, but I just saw Joe's recent purchase in this thread:
The flower looks to have been painted in a similar style, which might support a 19th c date, which is what I might guess anyway, but is the base really that terracotta colour or is it my screen?
Also, might this be an opium pillow?
Best wishes,
Julia
Yes, the birds are geese most likely, representing fidelity. I don't know why I said 'cranes' when they don't even look remotely like cranes 🙂
The flowers may be peonies, representing love and honour (?) Feathers may symbolise 'age'.
Thank you to all for the input. It is a lovely piece, I agree. Like I say, though...there are MANY of these items on ebay and many claims are made regarding their age and value. Caveat emptor!
Shaun
