Is this some great find or not a big deal? Trying to decide if it's worth investing in. Any help in dating and assessing quality and value is appreciated. Thanks! John
I wouldn't be certain if this is a good investment; partly because I don't know what you mean by investment or how much it is going for. Are you thinking of keeping it or buying and selling it? If so where? Do you have an actual shop, or an online one, or would you use ebay. They could all make a difference to the profit margin. I tend to look at sold items on ebay to see what the bottom line is on things like this and go from there.
So, please don't take this as commercial advice as obviously, we can't give that as such and I may be wrong, the pictures aren't great either. However, my amateur feeling is the lock doesn't look right for an old Chinese box?
I can't see the decoration well enough to say much other than that I like the bats, but I don't feel drawn to it.
Julia
I concur with Julia's thoughts on this wooden box.
In addition it's difficult to tell by the poor picture etc. However I believe the box is modern. Perhaps post 1980'S.
I believe that because the carving style and detail is amateurish. If you look at the brass hinges they look very modern/new.
It looks like some form of Rosewood. As far as a investment I would say no. As a object to admire or use daily. I would say yes.
Just my thoughts.
Mark
Thanks for the feedback, guys! Not having seen much wood carving it can appear very well done, but then when compared to higher level pieces it becomes clear the difference in quality. I will pass on this one and keep my eyes peeled for something of better quality.
Hi John,
Agree with Julia and Mark, for what its worth. The patina, or lack thereof, doesn’t look right to my eyes and I would keep walking, if I was looking for antiques. The tongue and groove is a nice touch. I would have guessed vintage to modern.
When I read the word “invest”, I was hoping someone would jump in. It implies, at least to me, something substantial. But I didn’t want to stick my nose in 1st...because I am often wrong 🤣
Todd
take it with a grain of salt
It looks Indonesian or Singapore/Malaysia, large ethnic Chinese successful, property owning population in Indonesia, so many items in the Chinese taste. Sharon
P.S. Indonesia did have some finely carved extra large chests, I remember seeing a huge VOC chest (more like a huge blanket/dower chest), finely carved with dragons that the fellow wanted as much for it as I paid for my Yamaha studio piano (I needed comparisons to keep track of how much things really cost, Rp.10,000 was about 5.00 US in 91), according to my household accounts book, I paid Rp. 3,800,000 for the imported piano and he may have started high wishing to dicker, because you usually ended up meeting in the middle but I was flabbergasted and just shook my head and mumbled to my friend that I hoped he was attached to it. It was lovely and extremely fine. Just like everywhere else, prices were commiserate with quality.
@sharonp The dealer is asking $900. I'm sure I could talk him down 25% or so if i wanted to buy it, so maybe 700ish. Way too pricey based on what has been said. Plus there is a crack to the top and some separation on one of the edges. But I do love wooden carving in general. Sometimes i see those little statuettes carved with such detail and they go for less than $500 which i feel is very cheap for such fine work, i would love to someday own some beautiful carvings. Seems like they might be undervalued. but the fine boxes look to bring a nice premium, and table screens, etc also can go for a lot from what I am seeing in researching these things. There is a little statuette at a local antique store I keep looking at which has lovely detailed work, but the hands seem too large and it bothers me. But the detail on the face is amazing. If I think of it I will get some pictures and see what you all think. Maybe the large hands have some sort of symbolism rather than being a proportional error?
No, for what it is, that is way too much for that box even with the discount, it looks the size of a large jewelry box. The interior is like a tea chest with the candle box and the interior tray beneath the lid, floor tea chest were not expensive even if they were old. The huge finely carved was the exception not the rule and it was substantially larger than the traditional American Lane cedar chest. I hope you do post what is available, I enjoy vicariously shopping during this long stretch, have not shopped in person since last February.
P.S. I also hope that means things are better where you are with numbers of new cases than here. Be well.
Texas, like Florida and California, not good numbers.
