Hello all, I found this today at the local Goodwill and liked it for some reason I just had to have it. I am confused by the signature and the inscription on the back that says "Vane and Bill Woodward, China 1982".  Sorry, I know it isn't antique but just wondered if anyone could offer and ideas about the why and what of this painting. (I think it's a painting and not a woodblock print) 🙂 I'm certainly no expert on anything... lol  Thanks for any ideas at all!  🙂

 Best wishes to all..

 Doug

Doug, it's fine, it doesn't have to be an antique to post on here.  I can't help with your painting, at first I thought it may be printed but the close up looks like it isn't - although the yellow seal looks stamped.

Maybe this is a tourist thing, where you can have your name put into a seal and added onto the artwork? Sorry, that isn't a very inspired comment, but I genuinely have no idea about it.  Perhaps if someone can read what the top seal says it may give a clue.

@julia Thanks Julia.. I appreciate it. Yes, maybe it is the equivalent of a Paris street painting in China or something like that. That does sound like a viable solution. It is indeed a bit "weird". Thanks for the encouraging words also.  I try not to annoy anyone on here as I do see this place as an invaluable resource of friendly information and I am grateful for it!!

Thank you for the reply Julia. 🙂

Looks like it is from Jane and Bill Woodward and they had a stamp made for their paper collections, if they were living in China in the eighties then they may have been on a sabbatical or any other number of things. If it came from a deceased person or a downsized clean-out during the lockdown, the obits in your area may tell you something about the former owners. The paper has an appearance of laid paper with the lines, but I have no idea if pith paper looks like laid paper and Google did not provide me with a definitive answer. I second Julia, show us what you find, interesting to see what turns up in different areas of the country a NJ d in other countries. Sharon

Doug, I know very little about Chinese painting, actually nothing about it, but I'm a printmaking professor and can tell that it is a block print that has had some painting added. One indication that it is a block print is that the black lines were printed before some of the color was added, you can see this because the color on top of the black causes the black lines to not appear as dark or dense as in areas where the black has not been printed on. Usually the black is printed last to avoid this problem. But color could be added on top of a brush painting.

The other clue is the quality of the line (black line). In some areas it looks like it could have been done with a brush, but other areas you can see the line is broken in a manner that is characteristic of wood cut. That is a pretty clear indication that it is a print.

Even though it is a hand made print, it is still considered an original piece of artwork and not a reproduction.

I hope this helps. If you have any questions for me feel free to ask.

An "NJ d," what the heck is that? It is not a New Jersey lawyer, it is a typo.

@clj Thank you Carla, That does certainly help!!.. I was wondering about how the pigments were laying on the surface on it. That would explain a lot about how it was made. It has a certain interesting look to it and it grabbed my eye so I picked it up. 🙂 Thanks for the help.. 🙂  So nice to have the Forum here! I appreciate the conversation and meeting of collectors thoughts. How Cool!

@sharonp  Thank you Sharon, I wonder if it would be advantageous to un-frame it to examine the back of the paper? Hard call sometimes.. lol

Thanks so much for the help.. I was also wondering if that might be a collection identification stamp. hmmmm interesting... 🙂 I will search around for and Obit also..  🙂

@sharonp Absolutely right!! I think I found this couple.... Here is an excerpt from the OBIT..

Starting about 1980, Jane and Pat Peterson opened Custom Travel and they started traveling internationally. Bill and Jane went everywhere, 98 countries by the time they were done. They went on African safaris, trips down the Nile, Nepal, India, China, Russian, Fiji,Tahiti, all over Europe, and lots of cruises. Bill had a great enthusiasm for life and loved seeing, doing, and trying new things. Bill is survived by 56 years of friends, his dog Sammy, daughter Wendy and husband Tom Forcella of Redding, son Mark and his wife Hannah, and grandson Neil of Sacramento. A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday May 5, 2013, 3:00 p.m. at Riverview Country Club. In lieu of flowers consider a donation to Mercy Hospice, 1544 Market St. Redding CA 96001.Arrangements handled through Allen & Dahl Funeral Chapel in Redding (243-1525

Indeed in China in the 1980s.. And with the note on the back and the fact it came from my area.. (Mystery Solved)!! Wow.. nice work! 🙂 Of course I may never know who the artist was but this is almost a provenance..  lol    Cool!!!  Brilliant also... Thank You!

@dcolosio An interesting life and a well written obit, you can't ask for more. I would print out the obit and attach to the back of the picture.

@dcolosio

The picture is Zhong Kui who has special features. You will find a lot of similar paintings about him. The characters on the top of his head are not Chinese (maybe some underworld languages), the bottom seal is Chinese - the name who bought it. (English and Chinese version).
