Rob Michiels used to be a very reliable auction house in the past.
But this is apparently no longer the case as they seem to mix good and bad stuff in their auctions now. (like so many other auction houses)
I think Peter also downgraded Rob Michiels to a D, right?
Well when I look through their objects there seem to be a lot of dubious lots (for example Wu Shuang Pu patterns which were dated to the 19th Century but clearly appear modern).
One highlight of the upcoming auction in July is this Gilt Bronze Figure which was dated to the Ming Dynasty.
My first impression was that there is no way this figure is from the Ming Dynasty.
There is absolutely no wear or other signs of age. The face is so smooth like the skin of an infant. lol
I am owning a similar gilt bronze figure from Guandi which was made in the 16th Century.
And it shows condition wise.
On a side note: I am always smiling when an auction house mentions the provenance and talks about an 'important collection' without putting a name on it.
Ok, maybe the owner does not want his name to be published. But then you can delete the 'important provenance'. I mean it is kind of silly.
But now I got a brillant idea: If I decide to part with my collection one day I will advertise it as 'from the most important collection in the history of mankind'. Hahaha
Oh yeah, right: The Bronze Figure at Rob Michiels. This is modern, right?

I am still rather in doubt regarding the bronze figure. I mean there should be a lot more loss of the gilt if it was from the Ming Period. It is certainly made in the Ming style but I can not see the age here.
It would be great to have the opinion of Peter here but since I am not interested in purchasing it I guess I will just wait for the auction result.
But I remember that Peter once said that these kind of gilt bronze figures are 'stamped out like cookies' nowadays.
Well maybe I am getting a little paranoid with the Wu Shuang Pu pattern. But this is not really surprising as it is heavily reproduced now. It almost feels like 90% of all objects on the market are modern.
I have the same issue here as with the bronze figure: Lack of wear.
The inscriptions are very crisp. But if these cups were handled since the 19th Century there should be a lot more fading.

@sanguo I remember seeing that bronze on Peter's weekly video on Friday. I think he thinks it's legit.
@sanguo The two bowls look ok to me. My small plate which is from Tongzhi isn't scratched either. Just the gold rim has some wear as can be expected. Probably both bowls are late Qing when they used stamped marks and apocryphal Daoguang marks. I might be wrong though because RM's pictures don't enlarge well on my phone.

I am not that sure about this Mallet Vase, as you are... one can see a "sand resedue" on the inside of the base. You could only see in person if it is artificial, handling it.
These Mallet Vases were very popular for a while at the fake market so this one I'd stay away. But the important Belgium collection will most likely have something more clearly judgeable at this auction 😅
