This is a charger size plate done with low relief work. I figure it is probably early 20th Japanese. I'm wondering if anyone can Identify the maker? Also, I am wondering if some patina was polished off because it feels like the color is not contrasting like it should to show off the design and it was hard to photograph. Curious to hear others thoughts.
It looks to be nicely decorated, but can you see the design clearly when you are not behind a camera? What I mean is, in certain lights is it going to look like a piece of metal hanging on the wall unless you get close up? I don't think I would want to spend money on something that didn't display well.

I like it, yes, someone over polished, there are ways to restore the patina or just let time do it (like everything else, if you feel like experimenting, it's on the internet). I used to have an old book by a famous antiques columnist, can no longer remember his name, but since it's all on the internet now, his method was baking the piece in lemon juice to restore patina. I should have kept his book, but I used it for trade fodder at a used bookstore.
@sharonp that's very interesting. Did you ever try to do it yourself and if so was it successful?
No, never had the need to experiment with the bronze. However, I did try his suggested method of filling a crack in old porcelain by boiling it in milk. It was not successful experiment, but I may not have boiled it long enough because I did not want to deal with scorched milk in the bottom of the pan. In any case, it did not fill the crack but left a milky residue. This turned out to be an English piece missing its cup, more a tea bowl than a saucer.
Maybe Real Lemon would work and you could avoid the lemon squeeze or possibly it would not work at all, no warranties given or implied, that is the nature of experimentation. I imagine your wife would not be pleased if you overbaked, plus you would have to borrow her turkey roasting pan to submerge in Real Lemon and that amount of Real Lemon might not be cost effective in the cost benefit analysis.

One cheap method I have had some luck with is hard boiled eggs, for a charger this size you probably need about 6 eggs, hard boiled and then crush them ( the yolk is what gives off the sulfur), then seal the charger inside a bag or container with the crushed eggs. Also for a really dark patina, if you know any photographers who process film, you can mix rapid fixer and water and brush that onto the bronze, it should darken pretty quickly... A bottle of fixer is maybe less than $20 so if you have a bunch of pieces to do its fairly cheap overall. Just make sure the pieces are completely free of wax or any dirt, so the patination is not blotchy. I then give them a coat of mineral oil, the finish can occasionally rub off, so multiple runs with the darkeners and oil should do the trick.

@jbeer2121 thanks! How long to leave the eggs in with the charger? Also, would I want to rub the crushed eggs onto the charger or should they not be actually touching and only in air contact?
Hey John,
The fumes are what colors the bronze, so don't rub them on it. It can take 30min-a few hours, just check it periodically.
