I find the topic on bronze censer quite interesting. Any thoughts on this one?
@zhtail The casting looks good, especially the sharpness of the mark. I do not ready Chinese and do not recognize the mark.
The concerning issue is the pitting. However, this appears to be a brazier, so perhaps the heat and heavy use is the cause of the pits.
To me, it looks late Ming to early Qing due to the simple form that resembles furniture of that period.
@greeno107 thank you very much. What do you mean by pitting? Sorry for the basic question. I do use it often. Maybe the previous owners too. Which is what it is for. 🙂
chinese I could read. It’s a special mark, as a private one. It’s “十贰楼”. I see only a couple examples of this mark in another famous collection, different formed censers though.

The piece on the left, reported to be authentic by EtherealAuctioneers.com, has a smooth, warm bronze patina. This is generally what I expect to see on genuine high quality bronzes.
Your bronze has spotted appearance, with small dimples / pitting throughout that gives a rough appearance. This is not what you want to see in genuine quality bronzes.
I also notice some differences in proportion of the mark to the size of the vessel. This might be due to differences in size of the two vessels, but it is worth noting.
Quality is a major indicator of authenticity. I would expect a genuine bronze with a rare mark would be in better condition because A) they would have treated the piece with great respect, and B) they would have used the best available methods and materials to make it that should resist the kind of wear that lesser quality pieces show over time.

This is an interesting area, and I totally agree with you on quality. Need help to understand how to evaluate. I asked the similar question on the daoguang bowl in the other thread, as I heard Peter talking about it too.

you are right that famous designs are often copied. As long as it’s a quality genuine copy, not a modern cheap one.

Your photo shows a bronze with fine smooth patina, unlike your brazier.
Yes, even an old copy would have collector's value, but it is very hard to evaluate bronze just on photos.
