Hi All,
Another weekend find. I picked up this little brass box at an estate sale. The decoration on the box itself is hand-stamped and pretty crude. The metalwork decoration doesn't really look particularly Asian, although there is a thin applied rim around the lid that appears to have ruyi heads on it. However, the panels on the sides and lid of the box are definitely above average, at least in my experience. They are oval and the base material looks like bowenite, although I am not positive. the applied floral mosaic is just glued on (is that normal?), and there is some damage--some flowers and leaves are missing. But what remains is very pretty. The leaves are jade or serpentine--they are harder than the bowenite, and look like jade to me, but I suspect serpentine is more likely! On one panel, the leaves are malachite. The flowers are mostly amazing orange to red carnelian, but some are amethyst instead, two appear to be rose quartz, one is lapis, and one is coral.
The stone panels appear to be far too nice for the box, and I am wondering if they have been repurposed from an older piece. Is there is any way to guess their age?
I am tempted to try and remove them from the box, which I am really not fond of. Any thoughts on that?
Thanks,
Charles
Hi,
The panels are pretty; my feeling is they were made for the box as the feet look to be of the same type, but admittedly, this isn't something I know about.
I am sure Mark will be able to tell you more about the materials and likely age etc.
Julia
Hi Charles,
I think you summed up the possibilities very well indeed. Not much more to add!
Personally I think the leaves are serpentine and malachite. The base material bowenite. Maybe jade feet!
The box itself is in my opinion from the 60's. It's in my opinion probably chinese by the rimmed ruyri design. The panels inserts are older. Perhaps early 20th century. And mixed by the presence of the malachite leaves on one panel.
I dont know about trying to remove the panels etc. They appear to be perhaps glued in rather than bezalled in. But I could be wrong. If the wood inserts are easily removed then you maybe able to get a better idea. You may need the assistance of a manufacturing jeweler or a hobbiest.
The missing parts can be easily replaced if you choose to.
Pretty looking trinket box that was very popular back in the day.
Mark
BTW it's not mosaic.
Mark
