Seven inch plate $5 from estate sale today. Know this is kitchen Qing but how old? Thanks....
George
Nice piece of Kangxi,congratulations.
Vic
Hi Vic and others, I really think this is mid-19th kitchen but possibly a bit earlier. Do any others believe this could be 18th? Would value all opinions. Thanks.
George
Hi George,
I think it could be. Is that the four-legged vase/ table mark on the reverse? I have only seen it in an old book of Chinese marks.
Anyway, I did a quick search and found other similar plates described as Kangxi. Here is one:

Either way, what a great buy for $5!
Julia
Hi George,
Vic is right: the flower basket has indeed a Kangxi precursor (see BW picture below from the book "Later Ceramics in South-East Asia") In the simpler form it's a widespread Kitchen Qing pattern from the 19th century. I think the Ebay example Julia found is also from the 19th century. The later in the century, the more the pattern degenerates. Your plate is probably from the first half of the 19th century (see color picture below from an 1825 find) Very decorative, good medium painting quality and for that price an absolute bargain.
Birgit
Birgit,
oh my!!!! The last photo you posted of the broken plate that matches mine ca. 1825 was found at the Cooper-Molera Adobe in Monterey, California.
Can you believe that the Adobe is currently a historic site in Monterey and includes a bakery where I often go to for morning coffee.
And unbelievably my plate was found yesterday at an estate sale about eight blocks from the Cooper-Molera Adobe. Wow, I wonder if there was a connection.
Thank you so much for that photo and what was the source of that photo (wonder if you can further photo and post the text that goes with the broken plate photo?
George
Julia,
The Mark is a “Jue” three legged tripod ritual wine vessel.
George
Hi George, what a coincidence! You seem to live directly at the source! Below are three pages from the book "Chinese Export Porcelain in North America" by Jean McClure Mudge. It's a very interesting book and still available in many used copies for little money.
Birgit
These patterns persisted for a long time. As most of you know, the sprigs on the backside of early 18th century plates tend to lose their leaves and become increasingly more sparce post Kangxi. 19th century Dehua 'kitchen Qing' examples did not copy Kangxi foot rims and backside decoration. Though they continued to make all varieties of these blue rim plates.
Here are some examples in chronological order. Your plate looks like the 1730-1740 example below.

Thank you to all for the information. Spain and Mexico were the early founders of Alta California and in fact all imported goods coming in had to clear customs in Monterey (San Francisco was still a sleepy village while Monterey was California’s first capitol). Of course this may seem relatively modern as compared to where many of you reside in Europe, but this was important in early California’s history.
Thanks again,
George
