Hello,
Thanks to the last discussion regarding the plaque I bought with the Dragon / carp, I was able to buy this one which has the correct type / common type of back with the support marks.. It looks kind of republic to me but might be older or newer... Any thoughts on this one. I think it's nicely painted, especially the hair, beards and facial expressions... Not sure of the colour balance of the photos ( I pick it up tomorrow), The wall looked yellowish so I corrected the wall to white, the original pictures the blue looked dull..
Yes, it is nice, but I have no idea about whether it is Republic. Mark will probably be able to help you.
How big is is this one?
The color looks strange can you take a photo in natural light. I think this one looks good. But need better pictures
@lotusblack Hi Brian,
Yes it was a really bad photo in the listing, the wall behind looks yellow... Here's the original photo, I colour corrected the first photos I posted here, so the wall was as white as I could get it.. I'm picking it up tomorrow, so I can post some better pictures.
There could be a date on the plaque. Send us more pictures when you get it. Looks late Qing / Republic . But let’s see what others think.
Much better natural pictures are needed here. Also the sides and the front on a angle.
Mark
@imperialfinegems Ok so I picked up the plaque today and it was getting dark, so I took some photos in the daylight in the car park.. Also one is in artificial light. I was surprised at how fine the painting is, which made me wonder if it is transferware. Excuse my ignorance on the painting process, but one of the reasons is that the surface is very flat with no relief, but this might be the way blue / white glazes are... I'm used to seeing vases so the flat surface might have thrown me off, and it may well not be transfer ware... It might be how blue and white is with the underglaze process, again I don't know enough. There are some areas where the blue is thicker and showing through a bit.. Anyway. Any thoughts on it? the surface is in very good condition and there is one one long fine scratch to the surface as far as I can see...
This scene looks very familiar, I just can't remember if it was from a previous post or from one of Peter's videos?
Hi Thomas,
It's a very nice plaque. Are you going to frame it?
It's difficult to determine its date. How was it described etc and who was the auction house if I may ask?
It could be republican period. Or most likely a later production.
This plaque is a excellent example of what I have been posting about in the past. There has been a explosion of plaques being sold as republican period but are modern production. Some are exceptionally well done. Like this particular plaque.
I am really not sure about this one. There is something very odd about it. Something I can't put my finger or thoughts on. If that makes sense. Perhaps wait for @shinigami to post her views. As well as others of course etc.
I would also ask Peter.
Mark
I don’t think your pictures are helping still. But I will tell you what to look for. First I have seen painting so good that you can’t see a brush stroke. A masters hand. Blending and shading. But with writing there will always be a cross over. Get a close up of the calligraphy. Second the back is concerning it looks like screen and not cloth. A closeup of the screening also. I’m not worried with the color of the blue and white but the grey on back is strange. The supports look good.
I’m really bad with Republic plaques, sorry. A blurred look is often a sign of screen printing, so you could take a strong loupe, 20x or more and look if there are little dots like on an enlarged newspaper print.
Birgit
I have been doing some research on porcelain plaques with modern techniques. The mechanical screening vs the cloth screening. In modern techniques the plaque is move through a conveyor during drying or sat on metal screen this lets the moisture escape them being metal they can be used in the dryer. Older techniques used cloth this method performed same method I have not been able to research the supports in modern techniques. Here is a authentic republic plaque it is done it a masters hand and the back is what you should be looking for.
Thanks guys for the input, all very interesting,
I think it's a cloth print on the back, The pattern on the bottom is moving in a different direction to the pattern at the top section (see photos)
.... Thanks @shinigam I don't have a loupe, but I will get one... Thanks for reminding me.
It would be interesting to know what the text says..
@thomasumjohnson It does look like cloth you can see the thread loops folding and thread shifts. Metal screens don’t have this feature. Would like to see angle shoot of the glaze. One other thing is the support running threw the bottom of the plaque?
