I could use some help with this little blue stem cup. I once looked around for age signs on porcelain because I noticed a few things. Now I am not a real expert and there is still a lot to learn. I am not entirely convinced that I see things well or have things right, so I will just share my thoughts with you without adding a period of time or age of the item.
1: what struck me most was the rough blurry spot at the bottom of the stem cup. I wonder here if it is about discoloration. In itself it is a logical place where it could possibly happen.
2: glaze contraction. there are 2 spots to be seen that indicate this, but I wonder if they should look like this on old porcelain.
3: at the bottom of the footrim there are a lot of very small black spots and there seem to be some larger spots, although I wonder if it is not dirty in small pits in the clay. it could not be cleaned. so maybe this indicates small rust spots
4: I think the color blue is quite similar to the colors that I have been able to find on the internet, but I always wonder whether I have obtained the correct information.
all tips and corrections are of course very welcome.
Hi Jordy -
The mark on your stem cup reads ‘Da Ming Xuan De Nian Zhi’ - Great Ming Xuande period made, but glaze tone, overall shape, proportions, writing and placement of the mark is totally wrong for this period ...
Monochrome stem bowls from the Xuande period were always mark to the interior center in under-glazed blue or incised, although the later are very rare. Unmarked examples in red and ‘tianqing’- sky blue are also know, but these are also very rare ...
Attached images of a reconstructed ‘sacrificial blue’ Xuande m/p stem bowl, unearthed at Zhushan, the Imperial kiln site in 1998, and a similar glazed dish, Xuande m/p from the Gugong, Beijing, with incised six-character mark to base ....

I agree this is not genuine - there are many modern fakes of these kind of monochrome cups.
Pretty much everything on this one is off - especially the thick and unrefined potting and the shape , but also as Stuart says the blue tone and proportions are wrong,
the rounded oaty footrim is surely modern, the way the mark is written is strange and its size is too big in relation to the cup ;
also how the glaze retracts/stops at the mouth and footrim is different from old examples.
Rather than consider age signs which can easily be mimicked, I think you be should looking more at and comparing the aesthetics: shape , form , proportions, painting style (where painted) , glaze and colours: even allowing for different computer monitor colour rendering , this kind of blue is a long way, imo , from the sapphire blues achieved on ming monochromes.

Apperently there is a lot of disinformation on the internet. I allready was sure that it wasn't a xuande periode piece, but I saw some pieces with the same shape wich were dated as 16th century and also 19th century. I think I have to avoid a lot of pages on the web.
By the way it's a pretty small cup. It is around 7 cm high.
But overal, thanks for your responses.
