Hi, All.
I have seen plenty of umbrella stands, and all of them are nearly modern. When I first saw this one, I dismissed it too. But the blue glaze made me take a second look, and when I did, I realized it was overall well made, and well decorated. The outer surface is fluted, and if you look closely, you can see little horizontal bars--the flutings are actually a bamboo pattern. The blue glaze is very pretty, and very even; between the flutings, where it is thicker, it has run down to form sawteeth on the bottom of the glaze, each one identical. There is a good deal of blue spatter on the inside of the stand. The inside appears to have been hand potted.
I like the footrim a lot; it has honest dirt and wear and iron staining; it does appear to be hand-cut on the inside. It is 22" high.
It is decorated with treasures and with botanicals, and a few insects, and a pair of fish that I really like. As far as I can tell, the outlines are hand-drawn, but it is hard to tell on the dark blue background. A few of the enamel colors are odd (there is an odd greenish yellow in some places, and a very strange brownish color that has a flat finish). The gilding is painted on, and quite sloppily--the sloppiness of the gilding is the main problem I have with this umbrella stand, along with that weird brown glaze (is that distinctive for a given period?).
To me, it looks late Qing (Guangxu?). Is it late Qing, or a much more recent piece? I don't think it is completely modern--it had three different generations of paint-spatter on it!
It was only $200 and I love the contrast between the blue glaze and the bright decorations, so either way, I will keep it!
Any opinions?
Thanks,
Charles
Interesting piece. My guess would be late 19th to early 20th C. The glaze finishes very neatly at the foot in the ridges, which is a cool look.
A lovely piece, I would have bought it too. I think you’re right with late Qing.
Birgit
I really like it, too. Very unusual, I think that was a good buy
Nice buy Charles. Very much late Qing period imo.
Mark
I think this is the nicest stand Ive seen to date its has it all. Good eye
Does the bow have significance as a wedding present and the auspicious symbols of the pomegranite and two carp? Love the blue.
I think it’s called powder blue, the cobalt was blown through a bamboo tube to achieve a slightly mottled surface. My small Kangxi teapot has the same blue.
Birgit
Hi Charles -
Concur with others comments, a nice late Qing example ...
The composition of differing precious emblems, flower and fruit sprays against the blue ground is particularly striking ...
My congratulations on acquiring ...
Stuart
Thanks, all! Always nice to get a piece that I really like, and is not just a learning piece! I have enough learning pieces!
Charles
