Hi fellow members, I just stumbled upon this in a local ad, my first thought was that this might be a Ming jar, but it is a period that I haven't focused much of my attention on so far, so I'm asking for second opinions. The jar is 33cm tall and has some restoration that can be seen in the pictures.
I hope the pictures are sufficient, and thanks in advance!

Well, having google'd a bit and looked more closely at the way it is painted, I'm not so sure this isn't a reproduction/fake, or maybe provincial? Still, if someone else can chime in, that would be swell 🙂

Found a lot on Christies with similar quality in decoration...

Yes , I agree it is probably fake, just from the blue tone and the quality of the decoration ,
although the pair you show on the christies site are unequally unattractive in my opinion, albeit with a much better cobalt blue colour,

Could be crappy photos, bad color balance and bad light, or a combination. I recall a topic lately, where Xin mentioned the different hues of blue on Kangxi export, so this might just be one of the less beautiful blues. Still, the decoration on both this and the Christies one is bad enough that I'll let someone else get this one (not to mention that it has a repair). :/ Well, at least I learned something, which is always good!

At first view (due to quality of these pictures) I would say it were a very bad fake. After comparing with the two from Christie's and looking into the details of yours I think it could be a real one. Just like you mentioned our topic about different blue sources. This one may use a combination of Zhe blue (dark and decent blue) and Shizi blue (pale and grayish blue).
This kind of rough painting style is mostly from small kilns who copied big or main kilns (use better blue and have better painters). Very similar to the case that Dehua copied Jingdezhen or Jingdezhen copied Longquan.

When I first saw your photos I thought this easily could be a 19th century piece, that foot rim appears original. If it does turn out to be a reproduction, it is an excellent one and worth having. I like it. ?
George
If the price is reasonable, I would take a chance on this. Comparing it to the Christies ones, I just can't bring myself to say it is a poor copy because I like the foot and the rim of the neck, and although it has an excessive use of the fish egg pattern (or whatever that is), the birds seem fine to me.
I think at the worst you will end up with a 19th c jar, it does have a look of that as George says, but as long as the price is ok, I think I would be happy to have it.
Julia
Hi Julia and George,
The price would be around $85, that includes transportation to where it is located. I guess it is not that much for a jar in this size, even with restoration, and a missing lid?

Worth the punt!
Mark
I agree. You should be able to re-sell it for that if you don't like it.
Let us know if you do and what you think of it when you get it!
Julia
I picked up the jar today. There are a couple of things I think are worth mentioning.
First, the area that looked like a repair near the rim, probably isn't, but seems to be some kind of production defect. I've looked very close to it and there is absolutely nothing to indicate that it wasn't meant to look like that. Admittedly, I've never seen a top of the line professionel repair, but if that was the case, I'm pretty sure the backside would have looked differently (I have excellent eye sight). There are no lines to indicate a break. I unfortunately don't have a UV light, but it is something I will check when I get the chance. Could it be some kind of flaw the potters noticed and tried to fix before firing?
Secondly, the foot is really smooth and well formed, just like you would see on smaller older (18th century) quality vases. It might be optimistic, but I think there is a very good chance that this is older than 19th century (I'm not going to say Kangxi, but I'm certainly thinking it out loud!).
I do not know when I'll get around to taking some photos, but it should be soon! (depending on when there will be good daylight conditions).

Here are the new pictures of the jar. Hoping to hear some opinions, also concerning the repair that doesn't look like a repair up close (on the front there are glaze bubbles in the area that is supposedly repaired), could it be a repaired chip on the inside?

Looks like a good old piece if i ever saw one , the glaze and age signs in the glaze look very good, The foot looks fine along with the paste colour , shape and painting style look good as well.

The blue looks like ‘Mineral Blue’ (shi qing or shizi qing). There is actually a great article on Christies about the blues...
