Dear all,
I recently bought this large blue and white charger. Is is heavily used, damaged and has been restored several times. I didn´t care because it cost near to nothing and I´ll use it as a reference piece.
To use it as reference I´d like to know your thoughts on age and origin.
To my eye the pattern looks like the typical export pattern with the Bridge except that there is none 🙂 So I think it may be a 18. to 19. century export piece. The finely carved border confuses me a bit as I have not seen many plates with that feature. I only remember to have seen it once on a export plate that was described as kangxi.
Thanks a lot for your help.
Regards
Robin
Hi Robin!
I love your charger. How big is it? I think it's probably later 18th century Qianlong from the back of the charger. I love the incised white border design. I think it's called an anhua decorated border:
https://gotheborg.com/glossary/anhua.shtml
Some extensive anhua decorated monteiths for your perusal:
https://www.cohenandcohen.co.uk/objectdetail/785268/0/pair-of-large-chinese-armorial-porcelain
I love your plate. Even more interesting that someone took the time to remove the old staple repairs for a cleaner glue repair.
Also, I've always wondered how that pattern feels. Do you feel the incised decorations, or is it smoothly glazed over? I have not yet acquired one with it.
I was too interested in the border I didn't look at the center: those fishermen's faces are quite something aren't they? 😋
Kindly,
John
I think, it‘s earlier than Qianlong. Should be a Kangxi piece. Very nice with that border.
Interesting. My opinion was based on the hastily drawn sprigs of flowers on the backs that were generally more well done, and more detailed during the Kangxi period (I think), as well as the more beige foot rim. I'll defer to your assessment, however. Either way, I love it.
Kindly,
John
The pattern on the back of the rim is early 18th century. I love the hidden decoration in the white parts. It might be worth a professional repair, shouldn’t be too expensive as there are only two parts to reglue and a rim chip.
Birgit
Robin,
Congratulations! What a lovely dish. I’m also impressed by the anhua (new word for me).
Julia, I think you are right. And the damage is exactly lined up with it. Makes you wonder if the damage was done whilst the hole was drilled. But still a wonderful piece.
Todd
take it with a grain of salt
Thank you for the info regarding Anhua decoration, now I know the correct term.
The plate measures 39 cm in diameter.
The incised decoration can slightly be felt with the finger. Those fisherman do not look that happy 🙂
The hole is for hanging. When I bought the plate, there was a wire loop attached through the hole. Your theory that it broke when the hole was drilled could actually be true.
@ all
Thanks for your feedback. I am a bit excited that it may be kangxi. I found a charger with very similar carving and back decoration that is described as kangxi. But it is on live auctioneers and I don´t know how reliable that auction house is..

What do you think could be a realistic value of my plate if I get it restored properly? There is a short hairline opposing the cracks, the rim is very rough with not much glaze left and there are areas with collapsed glaze bubbles that look dark.
I´d like to get it restored, but would not like to spend more than I could sell the plate for if I have to to cover the losses with other pieces I bought 🙂
Regards Robin
Hi Robin, the restoration wouldn’t add to the value of the plate. It would just make it nicer to look at if you want to keep it for yourself. So if you intend to sell save the money.
Birgit
Thanks. I always thought that restoration would add value, maybe because the buyer wouldn´t have to restore it himself.
I do not intend to sell it. I just wanted to reassure myself that I will not loose too much money if get it restored and will have to sell it later. I am very unsure about market value of pieces. Especially when there is extensive damage to them like to this plate.
Robin
