How about Malay? Not all types of obsidian is magnetic, it depends on the elements present. It is highly refractive and was polished to be used as mirrors in ancient civilizations. Ma'nawi, means spiritual, esoteric, it certainly fits the esoteric category. Sharon
I think this is the most interesting object I have seen posted in my time on this forum. I would like to know how smooth or rough the inside is. The exterior design seems to have been done with extremely precise dimensions employed. The lines running down the side to form the octagonal shape seem perfectly spaced to my eye. I'm curious if measurement would confirm they are exactly spaced. I'm not sure if that is script or a design around the top rim. If it is script, then I feel perhaps it could be very old, like some relation to cuneiform. The object seems too precisely done overall for something to have just been sloppily added as a half-ass border design, so it probably is some type of script or has some other specific symbolic representation. Personally, I think you could have something quite special with this one. Of course, if it turns out to be from Walmart, I retract everything I just wrote. Cheers! John
Is the diameter of the top and bottom the same or different? Also, is the lowest spot in the curve of the sides exactly in the middle or does it fall slightly more to the top or bottom?
Obsidian is high-silica volcanic glass. It contains a small amount of iron, a few % at most (iron minerals give it it's dark color), and is never magnetic. It can be fairly transparent, but can also be quite opaque. The crack on the bottom, and the bottom itself, look a bit odd, but the sides definitely look molded--look how rounded all the decoration is. Not at all like carving. I think it is molded glass.
Interesting comments that obsidian is never magnetic. I know nothing about them but a quick Google search reveals via chemical analysis and other papers that are contradictory thoughts/views to yours.

Hello Todd,
Not going to get involved in the debate as to the material your item is made from except to say that depending on where in the world and what materials were present when the Obsidian was created can give it different properties. If your item was cast then of course it has been remelted to make it's present form and that action could change some of it's properties.
Unable to see from the photo's if your item has been cast or carved still think it has a middle eastern flavor and that brown stain is the residue of a material that held on perhaps a metal top and the whole was a lamp and the base which you have formed the tank for the oil. The writing look like old Hebrew to my eye which leaves the question how did it end up in your part of the world. If there is a synagogue close to you it may clear up the writing part at least.
Michael.
Thanks everyone,
I’ll try to figure out if its Hebrew, per Julia and Michael, or perhaps a similar script. Maybe I will email someone who specializes in such. My last two emails regarding the Kutani vase with the micro calligraphy have gone unanswered, so I am not doing so well in that area 😋 . But will give it a try.
Will post any update if I have one.
Todd
Oh, almost forgot, I need to answer some questions John has supposed. Will do so in the morning, apologies for the delay 😊
take it with a grain of salt
