I bought these bamboo pots from a seller stepherandel on ebay and i asked the seller why she thought they were vintage. The seller replied that she simply wasn't sure if they were antique or not so she listed them as vintage because when she is not certain if something is antique she will not list it as antique. She was such a nice person, i said i would investigate and let her know what i found out. Hence I was wondering if anyone might have an idea how to go about finding out the age of bamboo pots or take a shot at the age of these. I already bought them, but want to try find out.
They cost £13.50 (incl postage)
The female figure pot is 24.5 cm tall, 11 cm diameter, weighing 475 grams,and the boat pot is 23.5 cm tall, 10.5 cm in diameter, weighing 356 grams.

These are large brush holder/bitong.
As to age not very old, 20th Century due the lack of detail and what appears to be unused.
Pity about the crack, but for the price you paid including postage it is OK. They make a nice pair for decoration purposes.
As to dating bitongs whether bamboo or wood is always difficult but he general thought are but not limited the following:
1. Detail work on said or the lack of.
2. Obvious wear and tear as to use and age through handling etc.
3. Deliberate attempts to age and or wear.
4. Signs of use, old ink?
5. Old calligraphy style and or signature.
6. Structure of said bitong.

Very hard to date bamboo items, imo, .....beware particularly of very intricate carving and patterns which have actually been cut on a computer!
I would look for patina, a softening or smoothing of the surface where lots of greasy hands have touched and handled it and the surface becomes darker, likewise on the base/footrim where it should be smooth and dark from being moved across tables and desks etc.
Could be that the middle panels on your pots have been stained, and there has been some roughening of the surface, imitating wear, outside the carved panels. The base and inside rims look quite clean. Not sure how long it takes bamboo to crack like this

I guess from what you have said then the base does look quite modern. I knew this was going to be hard 🙂 Perhaps she doesn't mind so much now it is sold, but I have seen 1950's used alot in relation to the non modern ones. Also china is selling alot of these, and i think they are genuine what we might take as antique bamboo pots, which means they are less than 75 years old. So 1950's + and i am speculating would be the most likely time for many of these.
I am guessing this is one of the computer cut designs.
