Hi, found this for sale locally, but I know next to nothing about kendis. I thought the foot looked a bit suspicious, and it looks very heavily glazed. It was supposedly bought in Indonesia in the 80s.
What do you think?

Hi Michael,
I think this may have been made in Indonesia in the 1980s...
You will have to wait for an expert for a more reliable opinion. Just guessing here.

Thanks, compared to pictures of older examples, it does look rather "wrong".

Hi Michael, being still a beginner in SE Asian ceramics this kendi doesn’t look bad to me. Perhaps a bit sloppily painted but quite ok for a 16th century Thai export kendi. Looks like it has been under water for some time. This kind of ware is still affordable so I’m not sure if the fake industry is that advanced here. There are fakes of South East Asia items on Ebay but they can be clearly recognized as such (ceramic elephants and the like)

Thanks Birgit, it is also an area where I feel a bit outside my comfort zone, but it is great to learn something new 🙂

Sorry Michael, I was just guessing. The holes and poor quality of the material is what made me think it was newer. But maybe that is a result of it having been in the water for a few centuries?

No worries, I was very unsure myself, as this is not something I've looked that much at before!

That top rim design looks like the two vases I took to the Lampu lady. They worked well for a country French feel I was going for, my biggest critic came home from school and informed me, "Mama, your sofa looks like a giant banana." He now owns these lamps.
P.S. That cut at the lip, I do not think that is a crack, both the vases had the same thing at the lip. I almost did not buy them because of the lips. It is just the way they are potted. I like the free and loosely painted appeal of your piece.
P.P.S. Mine could be fake, but I do not think your piece is fake, thanks, I have killed an afternoon looking ay grayish ground Southeast Asian pottery.
